Determination of internal qualities of Newhall navel oranges based on NIR spectroscopy using machine learning

Approaches using machine learning methods were investigated systematically to determine the internal quality parameters of Newhall navel oranges based on near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Each stage of the approach was investigated extensively and with full comparison. To ensure credibility and robustness, a much larger sample set than previous studies was obtained. Furthermore, the prediction performance of three kinds of NIR spectra (equatorial surface spectra, distal end surface spectra and juice spectra) were evaluated and compared. By using an optimal machine learning approach, all three kinds of spectra yielded promising results for quality measurements. The obtained results were better than that in most previous studies. The equatorial surface spectra performed slightly but consistently better than the distal end spectra. The juice spectra performed best in predicting most internal quality parameters. But in predicting the vitamin C content, the juice spectra performed worse than the surface spectra, which indicated that the prediction with NIRS might result from indirect factors. A GOA-Based Fault-Tolerant Trajectory Tracking Control for an Underwater Vehicle of Multi-Thruster System Without Actuator Saturation

Summary: This paper proposes an intelligent fault-tolerant control strategy for underwater vehicles, which combines a refined backstepping algorithm for trajectory tracking and a Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA) for fault detection and fault recovery. The simulations demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed control strategy in handling power loss cases and actuator saturation, and provide promising results for dam detection applications.

An Intelligent Deterministic Scheduling Method for Ultralow Latency Communication in Edge Enabled Industrial Internet of Things

Summary: The edge-enabled Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platform is crucial in the acceleration of smart industry development. However, as real-time IIoT applications increase, it becomes challenging to achieve fast response time, low latency, and efficient bandwidth utilization. To address this issue, researchers have recently studied time-sensitive network (TSN) to enable low latency communication through deterministic scheduling. This article analyzes the combinability problem and proposes the noncollision theory-based deterministic scheduling (NDS) method for achieving ultralow latency communication for time-sensitive flows. Additionally, a dynamic queue scheduling (DQS) method is presented to improve bandwidth utilization for best-effort flows. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of NDS/DQS in supporting deterministic ultralow latency services and efficient bandwidth utilization.

Novel Extended State Observer Design for Uncertain Nonlinear Systems via Refined Dynamic Event-Triggered Communication Protocol

Summary: This article investigates the design problem of an extended state observer (ESO) for uncertain nonlinear systems subject to limited network bandwidth. A dynamic event-triggered communication protocol is proposed for rational information exchange scheduling, achieving a desirable tradeoff between observation performance and communication resource efficiency. A novel paradigm of event-triggered Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy ESO is introduced, and the TSFESO design approach is derived to carry out exponential convergence for estimation error dynamics under the dynamic event-triggered mechanism. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through numerical examples, expanding the application scope of ESO with improved event-triggered strategies.

Consensus Formation Tracking for Multiple AUV Systems Using Distributed Bioinspired Sliding Mode Control

Summary: This paper proposes a distributed bioinspired sliding mode controller to solve the consensus formation tracking problem of multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) with nonlinear and uncertain dynamics. A neural dynamic model is employed to replace the nonlinear sign or saturation function in the synthesis of conventional sliding mode controllers, which can address the high frequency chattering issue and improve the robustness to the noises. The input-to-state stability of the resulting closed-loop system is proved by the Lyapunov stability theory in the presence of bounded lumped disturbance. Simulation experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed distributed formation control protocol.

Exploiting Radio Fingerprints for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping

Summary: Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is crucial for unmanned systems to achieve self-localization and navigation. Performing SLAM in large environments is challenging due to sensor limitations, complexity of the environment, and computational resources. We propose a novel approach for localization and mapping that utilizes radio fingerprints, such as WiFi or LTE radio features, which are widely available in existing infrastructure. Our system includes two solutions: Radio SLAM, where a radio fingerprint map is generated using SLAM technique, and Radio+LiDAR SLAM, which improves accuracy and speed by using radio fingerprints to assist conventional LiDAR-based SLAM.

Generative Adversarial Learning for Trusted and Secure Clustering in Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks

Summary: In this article, a trust management mechanism based on generative adversarial network (GAN) is proposed for industrial wireless sensor networks to address the detection of malicious nodes. First, type-2 fuzzy logic is used to evaluate the reputation of sensor nodes and alleviate the uncertainty problem. Then, trust vectors are collected to train a GAN-based codec structure for further malicious node detection. Additionally, a GAN-based trust redemption model is constructed to enhance the resilience of trust management to avoid permanent isolation of normal nodes due to error detections. The proposed mechanism is applied to secure clustering for reliable and real-time data transmission, achieving a high detection rate of up to 96% and a low false positive rate below 8% according to simulation results.

A SLIDING MODE FAULT RECONSTRUCTION METHOD USING IMPROVED REDUCED ORDER MODEL

Summary: An improved fault reconstruction scheme is proposed for a degree linear system with relative degree larger than one and input and output disturbances, using a reduced order model of multi-actuators and sensors. The dynamic equations are transformed into augmented matrices for easier manipulation. An improved method for parameter design of the reduced order system is proposed, resulting in a system with only generalised faults and insensitivity to generalised disturbances. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the reduced order system in reconstructing gradual and abrupt faults, as well as high and low frequency faults.

A NOVEL TIME-VARYING FORMATION OBSTACLE AVOIDANCE ALGORITHM FOR MULTIPLE AUVs

Summary: In this paper, a novel controller named IAPF-GR-AT is proposed for time-varying formation reconfiguration and obstacle avoidance of a fleet of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in the three-dimensional ocean environment. The controller combines improved artificial potential field, graph rigidity theory, and affine transformation. It allows for safe navigation route planning using the IAPF method, formation tracking based on the GR theory, and dynamic formation reconfiguration using the AT theory. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the designed controller in formation reconfiguration and obstacle avoidance.

Novel Bionic Soft Robotic Hand With Dexterous Deformation and Reliable Grasping

Summary: A novel bionic soft robotic hand has been developed, consisting of a palm and five fingers that can operate independently. The fingers of this hand are capable of stretching and bending, while the thumb can mimic the activities of a human thumb. The palm can change its curvature by using an air chamber. The hand palm adopts a particle jamming method to achieve passive variable stiffness, improving the grasping stability and the ability to wrap objects.

An Improved SSD-Like Deep Network-Based Object Detection Method for Indoor Scenes

Summary: Indoor scene object detection technology is of great research significance, and it has become a popular research topic in the field of indoor robot scene understanding. Deep learning-based solutions have achieved good results in object detection, but there are still challenges in indoor object detection methods, such as lighting and occlusion problems caused by the complexity of the indoor environment. This article proposes an improved object detection method based on deep neural networks, which utilizes a framework similar to the single-shot multibox detector (SSD). The proposed method enhances information transmission using an improved ResNet50 network and improves the feature expression capability of the feature extraction network. Additionally, a multiscale contextual information extraction (MCIE) module is used to extract contextual information of the indoor scene, thus improving indoor object detection. An improved dual-threshold non-maximum suppression (DT-NMS) algorithm is also utilized to address occlusion problems in indoor scenes. The proposed method is tested on the SUN2012 dataset, and experimental results show a mean average precision (mAP) of 54.10%, surpassing the state-of-the-art methods.

Combination of nanoparticles and gelatin-genipin hydrogel enhances the antioxidant activity, stability, and release properties of curcumin

The results showed that CUR-loaded nanoparticles and CUR NPs-filled gelatin-genipin gels had significantly higher antioxidant activity, stability, and in vitro release profile compared to free CUR. The GL/GP-CUR NPs exhibited the highest antioxidant activity and increased stability, while the CUR NPs had a faster release rate. These findings suggest that GL/GP-CUR NPs have potential as an effective delivery system for CUR in the food industry.

Influence of polysaccharide-based co-encapsulants on efficiency, stability, and release of vitamins B12 and D3 in multilayered microcapsules

Summary: This study developed solid microcapsules containing co-loaded vitamin B12 and D3 using a W1/O/W2 emulsions and spray-drying method. The addition of polysaccharides as co-encapsulants improved the morphological characteristics, encapsulation efficiency, storage stability, and gastrointestinal simulation of the microcapsules. The electrostatic bonding with chitosan and multilayer protection from the W1/O/W2 structure contributed to the high encapsulation efficiency of vitB12. Incorporating polysaccharides into W2 enhanced the particle integrity of the dried powders and improved the retention rate and encapsulation efficiency of vitamins. Sodium carboxymethylcellulose showed the best protection for vitB12 and lower degradation rates for vitD3, while sodium alginate exhibited controlled release and the highest cumulative release under simulated gastric and intestinal conditions, respectively.

Modelling swelling effects in real espresso extraction using a 1-dimensional coarse-grained model

Summary: This study investigates the effects of swelling on espresso extraction by incorporating a particle-level swelling model into a one-dimensional bed-level extraction model. The results show that swelling only slightly affects the yield and strength at a fixed flow rate, but considerably enhances the strength at a fixed pressure drop. The finer the coffee particles, the more pronounced the enhancement. It is suggested that better control of yield and strength can be achieved by fixing the flow rate in an espresso machine. It is also indicated that numerical extraction simulations, when properly incorporated with relevant physical effects, can be used to predict the extraction kinetics and guide the design and production of espresso machines.

Characterization of methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride esterified corn starch and their ability in stabilizing Pickering emulsion

Summary: Methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MeTHPA) esterified corn starches (MeCS) with degrees of substitution (DS) ranging from 0.0066 to 0.072 were prepared and found to be effective in stabilizing Pickering emulsion. The modification of MeTHPA damaged the crystal structure of corn starch, roughened its surface structure, and increased its contact angle, which were positively correlated with the DS of MeCS. The particle size of MeCS increased and then decreased with increasing DS, with the smallest size observed for MeCS with a DS of 0.072. The Pickering emulsions stabilized by MeCS with a DS of 0.072 exhibited better stability compared to those stabilized by MeCS with lower DS, which can be attributed to their smaller particle size and higher viscosity. MeCS with a DS of 0.072, at a concentration of 3% (w/v), could maintain emulsion stability even after 50 days of storage. These findings suggest that MeCS with appropriate DS and concentration levels could be effective particle stabilizers for Pickering emulsions.

Vacuum impregnation assisted simultaneous micronutrients fortification and phytic acid reduction in lentils
