The chemical composition and morphology of cuticular wax in mature fruit of nine blueberry cultivars were investigated using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC MS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Triterpenoids and beta-diketones were the most prominent compounds, accounting for on average 64.2% and 16.4% of the total wax, respectively. Ursolic or oleanolic acid was identified as the most abundant triterpenoids differing in cultivars. Two beta-diketones, hentriacontan-10,12-dione and tritriacontan-12,14-dione, were detected in cuticular wax of blueberry fruits for the first time. Notably, hentriacontan-10,12-dione and tritriacontan-12,14-dione were only detected in highbush (V. corymbosum) and rabbiteye (V. ashei) blueberries, respectively. The results of SEM showed that a large amount of tubular wax deposited on the surface of blueberry fruits. There was no apparent difference in wax morphology among the nine cultivars. 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) alleviated oxidative damage and programmed cell death in fresh-cut pumpkins

Jingyi Liang, Fan Guo, Shifeng Cao, Ke Zhao, KeXin Zhao, Hongfei Wang, Xingfeng Shao, Yingying Wei, Chundan Zhang, Yonghua Zheng, Feng Xu

Summary: This study investigated the regulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on plant anti-oxygenation and programmed cell death (PCD) in fresh-cut pumpkins. The results showed that exogenous GABA positively promoted GABA accumulation and alleviated oxidant damage in pumpkins tissue. GABA treatment also delayed DNA degradation, cytochrome c release, and cell apoptosis in pumpkin cells. On the other hand, the inhibitor of GABA generation, 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MP), accelerated oxidant damage and induced cell death in the pumpkins.

Melatonin treatment delays postharvest senescence of broccoli with regulation of carotenoid metabolism

Jiajun Lou, Chenghao Wu, Hongfei Wang, Shifeng Cao, Yingying Wei, Yi Chen, Shu Jiang, Xingfeng Shao, Feng Xu

Summary: Melatonin treatment maintained the sensory quality of broccoli florets by inhibiting yellowing and increasing endogenous melatonin content. It also suppressed the concentrations of certain carotenoids, while inhibiting the expression of carotenoid biosynthetic genes. This resulted in less accumulation of abscisic acid precursors, inhibiting abscisic acid production during the yellowing process.

?-Aminobutyric acid treatment induced chilling tolerance in postharvest kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis cv. Hongyang) via regulating ascorbic acid metabolism

Qingli Liu, Xu Li, Shuwang Jin, Wanqi Dong, Yong Zhang, Wei Chen, Liyu Shi, Shifeng Cao, Zhenfeng Yang

Summary: The effect of GABA treatment in postharvest kiwifruit was studied, and it was found that GABA treatment resulted in higher chilling tolerance and better quality maintenance. This was attributed to the increase in AsA levels, which helped protect cell membranes and alleviate chilling-induced oxidative stress. GABA treatment also upregulated the expression of AsA metabolic genes and candidate transcription factors involved in AsA biosynthesis.

Involvement of a receptor-like kinase complex of FvFLS2 and FvBAK1 in brassinosteroids-induced immunity in postharvest strawberry fruit

Chunhong Li, Kaituo Wang, Meiling Tan, Changyi Lei, Shifeng Cao

Summary: Plants sense conserved pathogen-derived features through pattern-recognition receptors, and activate immune responses against microbial invaders. FvBAK1, a receptor-like kinase in strawberry, is rapidly induced by the plant hormone brassinosteroid and plays a crucial role in providing immunity against the necrotrophic fungus Botrytis cinerea. FvBAK1 interacts with FvFLS2 and FvBIK1, linking the pathogen-derived receptor complex to downstream intracellular signaling pathways.

Hydrogen-rich water treatment increased several phytohormones and prolonged the shelf life in postharvest okras

Wanqi Dong, Shifeng Cao, Qihang Zhou, Shuwan Jin, Chujiang Zhou, Qingli Liu, Xu Li, Wei Chen, Zhenfeng Yang, Liyu Shi

Summary: Hydrogen-rich water treatment delays senescence and maintains fruit quality in postharvest okras. The treatment increases levels of melatonin, gibberellin (GA), and indoleacetic acid (IAA), while decreasing abscisic acid (ABA) content. These changes are associated with the upregulation of melatonin biosynthetic genes and anabolic genes for GA and IAA, as well as the down-regulation of ABA biosynthetic genes and up-regulation of ABA degradative gene.

Yanan Wang, Jiachen Shi, Yong-Jiang Xu, Chin-Ping Tan, Yuanfa Liu

Summary: This study investigates the variations in lipid digestion profiles among individuals of different ages using in vitro digestion models. The findings suggest that adults have a more comprehensive lipid digestion compared to infants, and infants tend to release shorter chain length and more saturated free fatty acids during digestion. Additionally, the particle sizes in the stomach of the elderly were consistently larger. This study enhances our understanding of how lipids with different degrees of unsaturation undergo digestion in diverse age groups.

Mechanism of aroma enhancement methods in accelerating Congou black tea acidification subjected to room temperature storage

Zixuan Xie, De Zhang, Junyu Zhu, Qianqian Luo, Jun Liu, Jingtao Zhou, Xiaoyong Wang, Yuqiong Chen, Zhi Yu, Dejiang Ni

Summary: This study investigated the acidification of aroma-enhanced black tea during storage. Analysis of non-volatile substances and organic acids using UPLC-Q-TOF/MS and HPLC revealed a decrease in soluble sugars and amino acids, while an increase in organic acids such as oxalic acid, malic acid, and quinic acid. In vitro experiments further demonstrated that the acidification is a result of the decomposition of sugars and amino acids by heating, as well as the oxidation of aromatic aldehydes. Additionally, the study showed that the taste composition of tea infusion is altered, with reduced amino acids, catechins, soluble sugars, and flavonoids. This research provides a theoretical basis for improving the quality of black tea.
