Aims and Scope
Journal of Optics publishes new experimental and theoretical research across all areas of pure and applied optics, both modern and classical. Research areas are categorised as:
Nanophotonics and plasmonics
Metamaterials and structured photonic materials
Quantum photonics
Biophotonics
Light-matter interactions
Nonlinear and ultrafast optics
Propagation, diffraction and scattering
Optical communication
Integrated optics
Photovoltaics and energy harvesting
We discourage incremental advances, purely numerical simulations without any validation, or research without a strong optics advance, e.g. computer algorithms applied to optical and imaging processes, equipment designs or material fabrication.

Verified Reviews
The reviewers are very meticulous, asking professional and objective questions without requiring references to other papers. If the answers are not detailed enough, the reviewers may even provide their own calculations in the second round of questioning.
Overall, the reviewers have a rigorous attitude and high expertise. Their questions are precise and they won't overlook any lack of detail or loopholes in the answers.
The journal is not open access, but it feels more rigorous and objective compared to some open access journals in OSA's second-tier category. The level of papers published in this journal also seems to be more consistent.
It has a certain reputation in Europe, and personally, I feel that it is a step higher academically compared to a journal with an impact factor of 1.98 in OSA or a domestically established journal in OSA's third-tier category. The recent feeling with some open access journals in the second-tier category is that they rely a bit on luck, and the quality varies greatly, making it difficult to make comparisons.
In summary, this journal is not particularly fast in terms of speed, and its categorization seems inexplicably downgraded. If one is in a hurry to publish in SCI, or has specific needs regarding categorization, the cost-effectiveness of this journal should be considered.
