Aims and Scope
Materials Today is the flagship journal of the Materials Today family and is dedicated to covering the most innovative, cutting edge and influential work of broad interest to the materials science community.

Having established the journal as one of the most highly respected sources of news and reviews in materials science over the last two decades, Materials Today has expanded its scope to cover ground breaking original research in materials science, and aims to become a leading forum in the field.

The editors welcome comprehensive articles and short communications reporting breakthrough discoveries and major technical achievements as well as review articles from established leaders in engaging and rapidly developing fields within materials science and related disciplines.

Materials Today offers authors rigorous peer review, rapid publication, and maximum visibility. The journal expects to accept only the most significant submitted manuscripts, but will provide very rapid evaluation to prevent publication delays.

Famous relationship-based journals have low publication rates (with a total of just over 100 articles including reviews), and the proportion of reviews is disproportionately high. Furthermore, the submission guidelines explicitly state that only invited reviews are accepted. As a result, its impact factor dropped by 5 points in one go, and the bubble is bound to burst sooner or later. AFM has a publication rate of over 2000, with a low proportion of reviews, and its impact factor can reach 20. Journals like Nano Energy and ESM also have a publication rate of over 1000, with the same impact factor of 20. AM has a publication rate of nearly 2000 articles and an impact factor of 30+. On the other hand, Materials Today has just over 100 articles published with an impact factor of only around 20, making its impact factor questionable. Therefore, the impact factor of this journal can rise and fall dramatically. It will eventually fade away! The number of slots for first-tier journals is already limited, and such journals occupying these slots only increases the difficulty for ordinary people to submit their work. It belongs to the series of "taking up space without doing anything" journals, just like its sibling journal Nano Today.

The instant impact factors for the next 23 years were calculated as of June 29, 2023. The impact factors are as follows: Materials Today: 7.43; Nano Today: 5.07; Advanced Materials: 10.35; Advanced Engineering Materials: 9.07; ACS Energy Letters: 7.33; Energy Storage Materials: 7.47; Matter: 5.94; Joule: 11.32; ACS Nano: 6.07; Nano Energy: 6.51; Applied and Environmental Microbiology: 6.85.

It is predicted that the impact factors for the next 23 years, updated in June next year, will be approximately as follows: Materials Today: 21.3; Nano Today: 14.53; Advanced Materials: 29.66; Advanced Engineering Materials: 25.9. This means that Materials Today will experience a three-year consecutive decline, with a cumulative decline of 10 points. The evaluation of whether this is good or bad is subjective.
