This study compared 48 children (2-4 years old) with 42 juvenile chimpanzees and bonobos (2-4 years old) on a wide range of cognitive tasks, and it also analyzed 42 chimpanzees and bonobos to understand their cognitive development from 3 years old in greater detail.
The study showed that 2 years old children and juvenile apes (chimpanzees and bonobos) had comparable physical cognition skills (i.e. causality, space, quantities), but 4 years old children were more advanced than 4 years old juvenile apes (i.e. they continued at the performance level of 2 year old). Moreover, children were more advanced than juvenile apes in social cognition skills (i.e. social learning, communication, theory of mind) at the age of 2 years, and this difference was even more significant by 4 years of age.
The study demonstrates the early development of specific social cognitive skills in children and the slower development of physical cognitive skills.
