Summary: Bile acids not only play a crucial role in lipid digestion, but also act as signaling molecules in metabolic processes throughout the body. By binding to various receptors, bile acids regulate glucose and lipid metabolism, and promote glycogen synthesis. Recent studies have identified a novel intestinal protein that positively affects bile acid levels, providing a new target for treating metabolic and bile acid-related disorders.

Summary: This study found that FGF1 can increase glucose uptake in adipocytes by activating GLUT4 protein. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to FGF1 can stimulate adipocyte glucose uptake by transcription of GLUT1 protein.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the developmental changes in glucose metabolism and insulin signaling in goose embryos. The results showed that there were linear and quadratic decreases in relative body weight, relative liver weight, and relative body length, as well as a linear decrease in relative yolk weight. Serum glucose, insulin, and free triiodothyronine levels increased linearly with incubation time. The hepatic mRNA expression related to glucose catabolism and insulin signaling increased quadratically from embryonic day 19 to day of hatchment, while the expression of citrate synthase and isocitrate dehydrogenase mRNA decreased linearly and quadratically respectively. Serum glucose levels were positively related to serum insulin and free triiodothyronine levels, as well as the hepatic mRNA expression of insulin receptor, insulin receptor substrate protein, extracellular signal-regulated kinase, and ribosomal protein S6 kinase, 70 ku, related to insulin signaling.

Summary: p62 is a multifunctional adaptor protein involved in autophagy and various other activities. Numerous studies have shown that p62 is highly expressed in multiple cancers, and reducing its level effectively decreases cancer cell proliferation. Additionally, regulating cancer cell metabolism has been recognized as an important approach for tumor treatment. Recent reports indicate that p62 can modulate cancer cell metabolism through different mechanisms. However, the exact relationship and underlying mechanisms between p62 and cancer cell metabolism still require further investigation. In this review, we discuss the glucose, glutamine, and fatty acid metabolism in tumor cells and several signaling pathways that regulate cancer metabolism and are mediated by p62.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicological effects of lead exposure on hepatic carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in birds. Using the Japanese quail as an animal model, the study found that lead accumulation in the liver was dose-dependent. High dose exposure to lead caused severe histopathological damages and disruption of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Furthermore, lead exposure altered the expression of genes related to glycometabolism, fat synthesis, and oxidation in the liver, leading to liver metabolic disorder.

Summary: This study reveals that, under exogenous glutamine withdrawal, ectoderm can generate sufficient glutamine to sustain cell viability and differentiation, while glutamine in mesoderm and endoderm is a preferred precursor of other compounds. The study also suggests that factors affecting germ layer differentiation may include specific glutamine enzyme gene expression patterns at the embryonic stage.

Summary: In this study, Pyr-apelin-13 was found to regulate glucose metabolism in common carp by affecting the expression of key genes involved in glucose metabolism, leading to changes in hexokinase and glucose-6-phosphatase activity and ultimately causing hypoglycemia. Furthermore, Pyr-apelin-13 treatment also increased the expression of glucose transporter 2 in various tissues, indicating its role in enhancing glucose transport in common carp.
