Summary: Thermoplastic starch-based nanocomposites with varying glycerol content and montmorillonite as a nanofiller were studied during one-year storage using DMA, XRD, and NMR. The results showed the presence of starch-rich and glycerol-rich domains in the samples, with a decrease in the content of the amorphous phase and changes in molecular mobility during storage. Ordered structures were formed during storage, with higher glycerol content leading to larger content of ordered structures.

Summary: The objective of this research was to investigate the survival of probiotic bacteria encapsulated in soy protein isolate (SPI) matrix using different encapsulation techniques and the influences of various factors on their survival. The results showed that microcapsules fabricated using SPI-PEC coacervation or TGase induced crosslinking provided good protection to the probiotic cells during gastric digestion, heat/UV treatment and storage. However, the combination of these two modification methods resulted in microcapsules with lower cross-linking degree and loose package structure, leading to negative effects on cell viability during gastric digestion and storage. Among the formulations tested, SPI-PEC microparticles offered the best protection to probiotic cells due to the thermal stability and digestion resistibility of pectin.

Summary: This study explores a new method of producing thermoplastic starch (TPS) via extrusion and injection at a large scale, using tannin and glycerol simultaneously. The results show that the synergistic effect of tannin and glycerol improves the mechanical strength and elongation at break of TPS. The introduced tannin also enhances the thermal stability and antibacterial activity of TPS.

Summary: In this study, thermoplastic starch (TPS) with excellent performance was prepared by adding citric acid as a plasticizer. The results showed that citric acid improved the thermal plasticization process and increased the resistance to retrogradation of TPS through chemical reactions, chain fragmentation, and decreased molecular interactions. TPS containing 4 wt% citric acid exhibited the lowest level of retrogradation.

Summary: In this study, propionylated potato starch with different degrees of substitution was prepared, and the potential of encapsulating Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG was analyzed. The results showed that propionylation increased the thermal stability and resistance to digestion and hydrophobicity of the starch. The micro-capsulated LGG derived from propionylated starch demonstrated higher resistance to acidic conditions and greater storage stability at low temperatures.

Summary: This study explores the effects of spray drying operating conditions on the structure and digestibility of spray-dried corn starch. The results show that the apparent amylose content and swelling power of the corn starch increase after spray drying and recrystallization, while the particle size decreases. Furthermore, the short-range order, long-range order, and content of resistant starch decrease with the change in operating conditions. Digestive properties are mainly related to the short-range ordered structure and crystalline structure.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of different fractions of kraft lignin on the structure and performance of thermoplastic starch (TPS) matrix during photooxidative degradation. Kraft lignin from Eucalyptus urograndis wood was fractionated in ethyl acetate (EtOAc), and the fractions were added to TPS matrix films. The samples were exposed to UV-C light for accelerated aging, and their structural, thermal, morphological, and mechanical properties were analyzed. It was found that the fraction of lignin with higher phenolic hydroxyl group content provided the best photoprotection and stabilizing effect on TPS matrix.

Summary: Conventional plastic foams made from fossil-fuel-derived polymers are difficult to biodegrade in nature. This study presents a fast and scalable method to prepare cellulose-graphite foams by cross-linking cellulose fibrils in a metal ions-containing solution, followed by ambient drying. The resulting foams exhibit low density, high compressive strength, and excellent water stability. The cross-linking effect of different metal ions is revealed through density functional theory, showing good agreement with experimental observations. This approach offers a sustainable route for low-cost, environmentally friendly, and scalable foam production for various applications.

Summary: Scenedesmus dimorphus was used for tertiary treatment of municipal wastewater to remove nutrients while producing biomass with lipids for biofuel production. The effect of nitrogen to phosphorous ratios (N:P) in culture media, with and without CO2 supplementation, was investigated through batch experiments. Results showed that Case 2, with CO2 supplementation, produced higher biomass than Case 1. Scenedesmus dimorphus could remove nitrogen and phosphorous from wastewater in a CO2 environment and at the optimal N:P ratio. Total nitrogen removal ranged from 28% to 100% in Case 1 and from 60% to 100% in Case 2, depending on the N:P ratio. Total phosphorous removal ranged from 37% to 57% in both cases. Case 2 also had a higher lipid content of 29% in the biomass.
