Summary: Front-of-Pack Nutrition labels (FOPNLs) aim to improve consumers' food purchases and prompt product reformulation by the food and beverage industry. However, the effectiveness of FOPNLs in achieving these goals is still debated. This review of 65 studies found that although FOPNLs are associated with healthier food purchases, the improvements are small and vary depending on the study settings. None of the four commonly used FOPNLs stood out as clearly more effective than the others. Furthermore, more research is needed on the impact of FOPNLs on product reformulation and potential unintended consequences.

Summary: This research aimed to evaluate the nutritional composition of 654 foods and beverages from vending machines on a University Campus. The findings showed a high proportion of food items had high-moderate content of nutrients related to chronic disease, while beverages had lower content. The most common food categories were chocolates and bars, while water and soft drinks were the most available beverages. Vending machines contribute to an unhealthy snacking environment.

Summary: This study investigated the improvement of South African food labels for enhancing customer evaluation of packaged food's overall healthiness. Through qualitative interviews and consumer testing, the research found that health warnings and low health star ratings were effective in helping consumers identify unhealthy products. The findings not only provide guidance for improving food labels in South Africa, but also offer insights for label format selection in other regions.

Summary: Front-of-pack labelling (FOPL) systems, such as the Nutri-Score, have a crucial role in promoting healthy diets and raising consumer awareness. A study conducted in Poland gathered the opinions of experts on the Nutri-Score and its relation to an ideal information system. The results showed the importance of clarity, simplicity, consistency with healthy eating recommendations, and the ability to compare products within the same group in an FOPL system. However, concerns were raised about the Nutri-Score's limitations in helping consumers compose a balanced diet and its applicability to all product groups.

Summary: The equity of nutrition interventions is crucial in reducing socioeconomic health disparities. Front-of-pack nutrition labels play a vital role in providing accessible and comprehensible information for product packages, especially for those who have limited access to other forms of nutrition information. This study demonstrates that interpretive front-of-pack nutrition labels are equitable and effective interventions.

Summary: To assess the effectiveness of messages encouraging protective behavioral strategies, the study developed and tested the Alcohol Message Perceived Effectiveness Scale (AMPES). Two factors ("effect perceptions" and "message perceptions") were identified, accounting for 71% of the score variance. Scores on both factors significantly predicted the adoption of protective behavioral strategies. The AMPES is a useful tool for evaluating perceived message effectiveness and developing public health messages to reduce alcohol consumption.

Summary: Although some parents provide alcohol to their underage children, this practice is associated with negative outcomes. This study aimed to assess factors associated with parental provision behaviors and changes over time. The prevalence of parental provision of alcohol decreased from 40% in 2013 to 27% in 2019. Factors associated with parental provision included permissive attitudes, older parental age, lack of knowledge of relevant guidelines, survey year, and higher alcohol use. Gender and socioeconomic position were not associated with parental provision.

Summary: This study aimed to test whether exposing spectators to counter-advertisements exposing alcohol harms alone, or exposing alcohol harms and alcohol sponsorship, before watching an alcohol-sponsored sporting event promotes less favorable attitudes and intentions towards alcohol brands and alcohol in general. The findings showed that participants exposed to counter-advertisements exposing alcohol sponsorship and harms had higher awareness of sponsor brands, less favorable attitudes towards sponsor brands and drinking beer, lower purchase intentions for sponsor brands, and perceived less image-based similarity and fit between the sporting event and sponsor brands. Both counter-advertisements also promoted lower perceptions of the appropriateness of consuming alcohol while watching sport, higher awareness of alcohol harms, and higher intentions to reduce alcohol consumption.

Summary: The study found that during the COVID-19 lockdowns in Melbourne in 2020, there was an increase in expenditure and dietary energy from grocery purchases, with slightly larger increases in unhealthy products compared to healthy products. The most socioeconomically disadvantaged households purchased the most energy from unhealthy products during the lockdowns, while the most advantaged households had the opposite pattern. Overall, there was an increase in the proportion of total expenditure from unhealthy products, but no significant difference in the proportion of energy purchased from unhealthy products.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of calorie-related information on food choices and reveals that presenting either daily calorie recommendations or specific calorie information can reduce consumers' calorie consumption. However, when both types of information are presented concurrently, this effect is nullified. The study also finds that personality traits, such as extroversion and self-esteem, influence food choices, with extroverts more likely to choose lower-calorie options. Good self-restraint is also linked to lower-calorie choices. These findings highlight the importance of strategic calorie information policies in promoting healthier choices.
