The majority of studies examining the effect of nutrition information on food packets (such as the nutrition information panel (NIP), front-of-pack labels (FoPLs) and health claims) have examined each in isolation, even though they often occur together. This study investigated the relationship between FoPLs and health claims since (i) they both appear on the front of packs and typically receive more attention from consumers than the NIP, (ii) they can convey contradictory messages (i.e., health claims provide information on nutrients that are beneficial to health while FoPLs provide information on nutrients associated with increased health risks) and (iii) there is currently scant research on how consumers trade off between these two sources of information. Ten focus groups (n = 85) explored adults' and children's reactions when presented with both a FoPL (the Daily Intake Guide, Multiple Traffic Lights, or the Health Star Rating) and a health claim (nutrient content, general-level-, or high-level). A particular focus was participants' processing of discrepant information. Participants reported that health claims were more likely to be considered during product evaluations if they were perceived to be trustworthy, relevant and informative. Trust and ease of interpretation were most important for FoPLs, which were more likely than health claims to meet criteria and be considered during product evaluation (especially the Health Star Rating and Multiple Traffic Lights). Results indicate that consumers generally find FoPLs more useful than health claims. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Front-of-pack nutrition labels: an equitable public health intervention

Simone Pettigrew, Michelle I. Jongenelis, Serge Hercberg, Chantal Julia

Summary: The equity of nutrition interventions is crucial in reducing socioeconomic health disparities. Front-of-pack nutrition labels play a vital role in providing accessible and comprehensible information for product packages, especially for those who have limited access to other forms of nutrition information. This study demonstrates that interpretive front-of-pack nutrition labels are equitable and effective interventions.

An examination of public support for 35 nutrition interventions across seven countries

Simone Pettigrew, Leon Booth, Elizabeth Dunford, Tailane Scapin, Jacqui Webster, Jason Wu, Maoyi Tian, D. Praveen, Gary Sacks

Summary: This study assessed support for a broad range of nutrition interventions across seven countries. The results showed substantial support for interventions involving food labelling and food reformulation, while fiscal interventions had the weakest support. Factors associated with stronger support were higher self-rated health, higher educational attainment, female sex, older age, and perceptions of consuming a healthy diet.

Development and validation of the Alcohol Message Perceived Effectiveness Scale

Summary: To assess the effectiveness of messages encouraging protective behavioral strategies, the study developed and tested the Alcohol Message Perceived Effectiveness Scale (AMPES). Two factors ("effect perceptions" and "message perceptions") were identified, accounting for 71% of the score variance. Scores on both factors significantly predicted the adoption of protective behavioral strategies. The AMPES is a useful tool for evaluating perceived message effectiveness and developing public health messages to reduce alcohol consumption.

E-cigarette-related beliefs, behaviors, and policy support among young people in China

Simone Pettigrew, Joseph Alvin Santos, Yuan Li, Mia Miller, Craig Anderson, Thout S. Raj, Alexandra Jones

Summary: This study examines the attitudes and behaviors towards e-cigarettes among Chinese adolescents and young adults. The findings suggest that while a significant portion of young people have limited knowledge about e-cigarettes, a considerable number have tried using them. Those who have tried e-cigarettes were often motivated by a desire to cut down on smoking or influenced by their peers. Overall, there is strong support for e-cigarette control policies among this age group.

Trends in and factors associated with parental provision of alcohol to minors in Western Australia, 2013-2019

Leon Booth, Tahnee McCausland, Julia Stafford, Kelly Kennington, Simone Pettigrew

Summary: Although some parents provide alcohol to their underage children, this practice is associated with negative outcomes. This study aimed to assess factors associated with parental provision behaviors and changes over time. The prevalence of parental provision of alcohol decreased from 40% in 2013 to 27% in 2019. Factors associated with parental provision included permissive attitudes, older parental age, lack of knowledge of relevant guidelines, survey year, and higher alcohol use. Gender and socioeconomic position were not associated with parental provision.

Can counter-advertising dilute marketing effects of alcohol sponsorship of elite sport: A field experiment

Helen Dixon, Maree Scully, Jeff Niederdeppe, Emily Brennan, Kerry O'Brien, Brian Vandenberg, Simone Pettigrew, Melanie Wakefield

Summary: This study aimed to test whether exposing spectators to counter-advertisements exposing alcohol harms alone, or exposing alcohol harms and alcohol sponsorship, before watching an alcohol-sponsored sporting event promotes less favorable attitudes and intentions towards alcohol brands and alcohol in general. The findings showed that participants exposed to counter-advertisements exposing alcohol sponsorship and harms had higher awareness of sponsor brands, less favorable attitudes towards sponsor brands and drinking beer, lower purchase intentions for sponsor brands, and perceived less image-based similarity and fit between the sporting event and sponsor brands. Both counter-advertisements also promoted lower perceptions of the appropriateness of consuming alcohol while watching sport, higher awareness of alcohol harms, and higher intentions to reduce alcohol consumption.

Evaluating an alcohol harm-reduction campaign advising drinkers of the alcohol-cancer link

Leon Booth, Tahnee McCausland, Danica Keric, Kelly Kennington, James Stevens-Cutler, Lucy Scott, Simone Pettigrew

Summary: This study examined the effectiveness of a multimedia campaign in Western Australia aimed at informing people about the link between alcohol and cancer. The results showed that a significant proportion of respondents recognized the campaign and reported reducing their alcohol consumption as a result. The findings suggest that providing information about the alcohol-cancer link can motivate behavior change and serve as an effective strategy for reducing alcohol-related harm.

Does more information mean better choices? A study on calorie display and consumer behavior in restaurants

Dae Hee Chung, Doo Bong Han, Rodolfo M. Nayga Jr, Sang Hyeon Lee

Summary: This study investigates the effects of calorie-related information on food choices and reveals that presenting either daily calorie recommendations or specific calorie information can reduce consumers' calorie consumption. However, when both types of information are presented concurrently, this effect is nullified. The study also finds that personality traits, such as extroversion and self-esteem, influence food choices, with extroverts more likely to choose lower-calorie options. Good self-restraint is also linked to lower-calorie choices. These findings highlight the importance of strategic calorie information policies in promoting healthier choices.
