Wild mushrooms are important for many poor communities as a source of income and nutrition, and valuable for recreational foragers; continued research is expanding knowledge on the edibility of mushroom species to address confusion and concerns; there are numerous case reports on edible mushrooms, but uncertainties persist regarding safe consumption of different species and the need for further clarity is highlighted.
Wild mushrooms are a vital source of income and nutrition for many poor communities and of value to recreational foragers. Literature relating to the edibility of mushroom species continues to expand, driven by an increasing demand for wild mushrooms, a wider interest in foraging, and the study of traditional foods. Although numerous case reports have been published on edible mushrooms, doubt and confusion persist regarding which species are safe and suitable to consume. Case reports often differ, and the evidence supporting the stated properties of mushrooms can be incomplete or ambiguous. The need for greater clarity on edible species is further underlined by increases in mushroom-related poisonings. We propose a system for categorizing mushroom species and assigning a final edibility status. Using this system, we reviewed 2,786 mushroom species from 99 countries, accessing 9,783 case reports, from over 1,100 sources. We identified 2,189 edible species, of which 2,006 can be consumed safely, and a further 183 species which required some form of pretreatment prior to safe consumption or were associated with allergic reactions by some. We identified 471 species of uncertain edibility because of missing or incomplete evidence of consumption, and 76 unconfirmed species because of unresolved, differing opinions on edibility and toxicity. This is the most comprehensive list of edible mushrooms available to date, demonstrating the huge number of mushrooms species consumed. Our review highlights the need for further information on uncertain and clash species, and the need to present evidence in a clear, unambiguous, and consistent manner.

Removing methylene blue from water: A study of sorption effectiveness onto nanoparticles-doped activated carbon

Kehinde Shola Obayomi, Sie Yon Lau, Abdul Zahir, Louise Meunier, Zhang Jianhua, Adewumi Oluwasogo Dada, Mohammad Mahmudur Rahman

Summary: In this study, a novel nanocomposite (CSAC@AgNPs@TiO(2)NPs) was synthesized by depositing silver (Ag) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles on coconut shell-derived activated carbon (CSAC) for the adsorption of Methylene Blue (MB) dye. The nanocomposite was characterized using various techniques and showed a high surface area of 301 m²/g. Adsorption experiments indicated that the Sips isotherm and pseudo-second-order models provided the best fits for the adsorption data. The CSAC@AgNPs@TiO(2)NPs exhibited excellent adsorption capacity and can be regenerated and reused multiple times.

Determination of bioavailable arsenic threshold and validation of modeled permissible total arsenic in paddy soil using machine learning

Jajati Mandal, Vinay Jain, Sudip Sengupta, Md. Aminur Rahman, Kallol Bhattacharyya, Mohammad Mahmudur Rahman, Debasis Golui, Michael D. Wood, Debapriya Mondal

Summary: Minimizing arsenic intake from food consumption is crucial in arsenic-contaminated regions, especially where rice is the main staple food. This study developed models to predict the maximum allowable concentration of arsenic in soil and bioavailable arsenic in paddy soil. The decision tree (DT) model performed better in predicting the maximum allowable total arsenic in soil, while the logistic regression (LR) model performed better in predicting the concentration of bioavailable arsenic in paddy soil.

Two new species of Chroogomphus (Gomphidiaceae, Boletales) with biocultural importance in the Tlahuica-Pjiekakjoo culture from Central Mexico

Jesus Perez-Moreno, Magdalena Martinez-Reyes, Cesar Ramiro Martinez-Gonzalez, Elisette Ramirez-Carbajal, Anaitzi Carrera-Martinez, Javier Isaac De la Fuente, Joan Windhoek Olvera-Noriega, Olivia Ayala-Vasquez

Summary: In this study, two new species of the genus Chroogomphus were described based on genetic and morphological characteristics. The phylogenetic analysis confirmed that these two species, C. conacytiensis sp. nov. and C. flavovinaceus sp. nov., form separate clades from other species within the subgenus Chroogomphus. These species have great biocultural importance in the native culture of Tlahuica-Pjiekakjoo in Central Mexico, serving as edible taxa and being associated with Pinus pseudostrobus in Quercus-Pinus and Pinus hartwegii forests. Descriptions and photographs of the newly described species are provided.

Two new species of Xanthagaricus from Punjab, Pakistan

Muhammad Haqnawaz, Abdul Rehman Niazi, Abdul Nasir Khalid

Summary: A fungal survey of the Indus Riverbed discovered two new taxa in the genus Xanthagaricus: Xanthagaricus punjabensis and Xanthagaricus kotadduensis. Phylogenetic analyses confirmed their placement within the genus, with X. punjabensis being closely related to X. Thailandensis and X. kotadduensis being closely related to X. omanicus. The unique characteristics of these new taxa were described, and their addition increased the known number of Xanthagaricus species from Pakistan to three.

Occurrence of Erysiphe friesii var. dahurica on purple buckthorn (Rhamnus purpurea) from Pakistan

Najam-Ul-Sehar Afshan, Saliha Afzal, Maria Riaz, Arooma Saleem, Abdul Rehman Niazi, Abdul Nasir Khalid

Summary: Leaves of purple buckthorn showing powdery mildew symptoms were collected from Pakistan and identified as Erysiphe friesii var. dahurica using morpho-anatomical features and molecular phylogenetic analysis. Pathogenicity was confirmed by inoculating healthy leaves of Rhamnus purpurea, resulting in the appearance of white powdery colonies after 7-10 days. This is the first report of Erysiphe friesii var. dahurica infecting Rhamnus purpurea in Pakistan.

Abdul Rehman Niazi, Najam-ul-Sehar Afshan, Arooj Naseer, Muhammad Nadeem, Fatima Iftikhar, Iram Fayyaz, Asma Ashraf, Sawera Imtiaz, Shahzadi Qamar Fatima, Abdul Nasir Khalid

Summary: A new species, Phaeophyscia kaghanensis, is described from Himalayan moist temperate forest in Pakistan. The species is characterized by its greyish white to grey thallus, absence of asexual propagules, flat to slightly concave lobes, white medulla, black lower surface, large ascospores, and absence of secondary substances. Additionally, P. microspora is reported as new to Pakistan, and ITS sequences were generated for the first time.

Arsenic removal from aqueous solution: A comprehensive synthesis with meta-data

Sanjida Aktar, Shamim Mia, Tomoyuki Makino, Mohammad Mahmudur Rahman, Anushka Upamali Rajapaksha

Summary: Removal of arsenic from drinking water is a global concern, and adsorptive removal is considered the most viable method. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of various adsorbents and evaluate the influence of experimental conditions on maximum adsorption. The results showed that nanoparticles and pre-doped biochar demonstrated the highest sorption capacity among the sorbents.
