Summary: This study evaluated the recovery of polyphenols from pretreated banana peels using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). The effects of temperature (40-60 degrees C) and ethanol concentration (40-80%) were investigated. The optimum extraction condition, determined by composite desirability, was found to be 52.30 degrees C and 60.10%, resulting in the highest polyphenols recovery of 355.11 +/- 4.99 mu gGAE g-1. Furthermore, UAE was found to recover higher levels of polyphenols and flavonoids compared to conventional extraction techniques.

Summary: Kombucha is a fermented beverage made from sweetened green or black tea with a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts (SCOBY). Alternative extracts to tea are being used to create kombucha-like beverages, and regardless of the extract used, bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity increase during the fermentation process. Thus, it is feasible to use alternative raw materials to tea for the preparation of kombucha.

Summary: Microalgal biofuel has the potential to replace nonrenewable fuel sources and address energy, economic, and environmental challenges. However, the low economic viability of its production process calls for interdisciplinary research to commercialize this green fuel alternative. This paper evaluates the current status of microalgal biofuel production processes, compares various cultivation modes, harvesting methods, lipid extraction methods, and conversion methods, and highlights the non-destructive lipid extraction method (milking) as superior to the conventional process. It also recommends integrating the biorefinery concept, implementing genetic engineering, and utilizing artificial intelligence and process automation for efficient technology development.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the factors influencing oil extraction from milk thistle using supercritical CO2 as a green solvent. The effects of plant origin, cultivation year, seeds storage, high-pressure unit design, and initial plant material amount were examined. The results showed that adjusting the supercritical CO2 extraction parameters could improve the recovery of essential fatty acids and phenolic compounds, and the solid residues could be used for waste valorization.

Summary: In recent years, there has been increased interest in developing modular, environmentally friendly, and sustainable production processes that reuse, recycle, and reduce raw materials. Supercritical fluids extraction (SFE) is emerging as a promising technology that can contribute to sustainable development goals (SDGs). This review explores the use of SFE to recover bioactive compounds from biobased products and byproducts, with a focus on the potential applications in South America to help achieve the SDGs. While data on economic feasibility and environmental impact is limited, literature suggests that Brazil has the greatest potential for obtaining various products using SFE and achieving SDG 9, although dependence on imported equipment remains a major bottleneck.

Summary: This study aimed to extract water-based extracts from A. floribunda stems using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), hot water extraction (HWE), and Soxhlet extraction, and performed an economic analysis. The results showed that Soxhlet extraction had the best performance in terms of extraction yield and total phenolic compounds (TPC). However, after conducting an economic assessment, UAE and HWE were found to have lower manufacturing costs compared to Soxhlet extraction.

Summary: Purple yam, a tuber crop found in tropical countries, is a valuable source of anthocyanins and starch. Starch can be isolated from purple yam residue using acid pH, alkaline pH, and water steeping methods. The acid steeping method yields the highest starch extraction yield and purity. The isolated starches have a B type crystallinity and show an increase in swelling power and water solubility as temperature increases.
