Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers around the globe and accounts for a large proportion of fatalities in women. Despite the advancement in therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, breast cancer still represents a major challenge. Current anti-breast cancer approaches include surgical removal, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy and the use of various chemotherapeutic drugs. However, drug resistance, associated serious adverse effects, metastasis and recurrence complications still need to be resolved which demand safe and alternative strategies. In this scenario, phytochemicals have recently gained huge attention due to their safety profile and cost-effectiveness. These phytochemicals modulate various genes, gene products and signalling pathways, thereby inhibiting breast cancer cell proliferation, invasion, angiogenesis and metastasis and inducing apoptosis. Moreover, they also target breast cancer stem cells and overcome drug resistance problems in breast carcinomas. Phytochemicals as adjuvants with chemotherapeutic drugs have greatly enhanced their therapeutic efficacy. This review focuses on the recently recognized molecular mechanisms underlying breast cancer chemoprevention with the use of phytochemicals such as curcumin, resveratrol, silibinin, genistein, epigallocatechin gallate, secoisolariciresinol, thymoquinone, kaempferol, quercetin, parthenolide, sulforaphane, ginsenosides, naringenin, isoliquiritigenin, luteolin, benzyl isothiocyanate, -mangostin, 3,3-diindolylmethane, pterostilbene, vinca alkaloids and apigenin.

The Major Stilbene Compound Accumulated in the Roots of a Resistant Variety of Phoenix dactylifera L. Activates Proteasome for a Path in Anti-Aging Strategy

Redouane Benabbes, Sabir Ouahhoud, Mohammed Moueqqit, Mohamed Addi, Christophe Hano, Cedric Delporte, Aminata P. Nacoulma, Veronique Megalizzi

Summary: The main objective of this study is to estimate the biological activities of total phenolics content in alcoholic extracts of date palm varieties sensitive or resistant to Fusarium oxysporum.sp Albidinis through differential analysis. Stilbene products with antioxidant and bioactive capacities were found in the resistant variety Taabdount (TAAR). Additionally, the methanolic fraction of the TAAR-resistant date palm variety contains a significant hydroxystilbene compound, which exhibits antioxidant capacities, inhibits tyrosinase activity, and protects against hypochlorite-induced damage in human dermal fibroblast aged cells. The presence of hydroxystilbene in resistant Phoenix dactylifera L. suggests its potential as an anti-aging compound.

Ahmed Marhri, Aziz Tikent, Laurine Garros, Othmane Merah, Ahmed Elamrani, Christophe Hano, Malika Abid, Mohamed Addi

Summary: The Opuntia genus, particularly the eastern Moroccan prickly pear's wild ecotype, is well-known for its high-quality fruits. However, the white cochineal poses a significant threat to the preservation of this wild prickly pear population. This study aimed to develop a rapid and efficient protocol for large-scale production of the eastern Moroccan wild ecotype using axillary buds as starting material. The results showed that the use of BAP at a concentration of 5 mg/L led to the highest regeneration of shoots, while kinetin promoted root growth and shortened the root development period. These findings have the potential to protect this botanical variety, reduce the risk of infestation, and meet the demand for superior quality fruits in the market.
