Summary: This review examines over 300 papers published in the past three decades on the genotoxic effects of exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) on human and animal tissues. The authors find that while most studies showed no statistically significant effects, a minority of studies reported significant effects, particularly in vivo studies. The quality of the studies varied greatly, with only a few complying with accepted guidelines for genotoxicity testing. The authors recommend that future studies adhere to these guidelines and emphasize the need for a thorough evaluation of study validity and coherence with related studies.

Summary: This study found that oregano essential oil (OEO) has inhibitory and germicidal effects on Vibrio vulnificus, a pathogenic bacteria commonly found in seafood. The OEO works by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cause membrane damage in the bacteria, reducing their permeability and integrity. No DNA damage was observed at the tested concentration of OEO. Additionally, OEO effectively killed V. vulnificus in oysters. Overall, OEO shows promise in controlling V. vulnificus contamination in seafood.

Summary: Numerous studies have shown the protective effects of 'FLASH' irradiation on normal tissues, reducing induced damage. Radical-radical recombination (RRR) and transient oxygen depletion (TOD) have been proposed as mechanisms for this effect. In this study, the authors aimed to evaluate the contribution of these mechanisms by assessing DNA crosslink formation and anoxic DNA damage following FLASH irradiation. The results showed no evidence of crosslink formation but supported the TOD mechanism through the observation of an anoxic profile of induced damage. The study also found that pretreatment with BSO reversed the reduced strand break damage mediated by FLASH.

Summary: The two novel lapachol-containing ruthenium(II) complexes exhibited potent cytotoxic effects on cancer cell lines, with one of the complexes suppressing colony formation, inducing G2/M-phase arrest, and triggering apoptosis through ROS overproduction and downregulation of certain genes related to cell proliferation and caspase activation. These complexes show promising potential as chemotherapeutic agents for prostate cancer therapy.

Summary: This study comprehensively assessed GO toxicity and its dependence on oxidation level, elemental composition, and size, revealing that elemental composition and size do exert impacts on GO toxicity, while oxidation level does not. UV-treated GO showed higher toxicity levels, especially in protein and chemical stress categories, while sonicated GOs displayed increased toxicity levels with decreasing size, suggesting that the covering and subsequent internalization of GO sheets may be the main mode of action in yeast cells.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of exposure to titanium dioxide nanoparticles and heat stress on DNA damage and apoptosis in the hippocampus of mice. High doses of nanoparticles and severe heat stress were found to significantly damage the function of the hippocampus. The results provide data for assessing the risk of these factors to human health and for implementing safety guidelines.

Summary: The comet assay is used to assess DNA damage in tissues and biological samples. This study found that storage time had varying effects on DNA damage levels in PBMCs and WB samples, with significant increases observed in WB samples stored for over 6 months. WB samples showed higher levels of DNA damage compared to PBMCs.

Summary: This study examined the impact of different types of nanoparticles on human endothelial cells, revealing varying toxic effects and alterations in cell morphology. The tested nanoparticles induced DNA damage, apoptosis, and free radical generation, with high concentrations affecting cell proliferation and mitochondrial function. The findings emphasize the importance of understanding nanoparticle interactions with cells for medical applications.

Summary: DNA damage is a common cellular feature in cancer and neurodegenerative disease, but there is a lack of fast and accurate methods for quantifying DNA damage. The comet assay is a biochemical tool that measures DNA damage based on the migration of broken DNA strands towards a positive electrode, creating a quantifiable 'tail' behind the cell. However, the analysis of comets using existing open-source algorithms is time-consuming and requires manual curation. To overcome these limitations, we developed AutoComet, an open-source algorithm that automates comet segmentation and quantification of tail parameters. AutoComet significantly improves segmentation accuracy and reduces analysis time over ten-fold, providing a fast and unbiased method for quantifying DNA damage.

Summary: Zebrafish have become a popular model for assessing the genotoxicity of pollutants due to their orthologous genes and involvement in repair pathways. Comet assay is the main technique used in these studies, but standardization is needed for better interpretation and comparisons. Understanding repair mechanisms in zebrafish subjected to DNA damage is essential for further research on genotoxic effects caused by pollutants.

Summary: Pollution from mining activities can cause genotoxic damage to bats, particularly in species like Carollia perspicillata and Glossophaga soricina. High levels of elements such as Mn, Cr, Pb, and Zn were found in water samples from the mining area. The study suggests that bats in mining areas are susceptible to increased DNA damage, similar to what has been observed in other species.

Summary: Occupational exposure to pesticides in farmers results in significant DNA damage, showing a notable impact and variability in the studies. Smokers who are occupationally exposed to pesticides have slightly reduced DNA damage compared to non-smokers, indicating some genetic toxicity. The study demonstrates a higher risk of occupationally exposed rural workers developing related diseases due to the genotoxic effect of pesticides.

Summary: In this study, we found that Moringa oleifera seed extract has a protective effect against glutamate-induced DNA damage in RGCs, potentially increasing the cell survival rate without affecting DNA integrity. The seed extract is rich in phytochemicals and demonstrates neuroprotective effects, suggesting it may help prevent the development of neurodegenerative disorders.
