Summary: Barley is an important cereal crop used for animal feed and human consumption. Its grains are rich in phenolic compounds, which have health-promoting antioxidant properties. Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) were optimized and compared to determine the antioxidant power and phenolic compound levels of barley extracts. The solvent composition and its interaction with temperature were found to be the most significant variables. Both methods showed short extraction times, high precision, and good recoveries. Significant differences in phenolic compounds and antioxidant power were observed among different barley varieties, with MAE being slightly more efficient than UAE in terms of phenolic compound extraction.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with ethanol as the solvent to obtain the extract from Echinodorus macrophyllus leaves. The effects of temperature, ultrasound power, and sample/solvent ratio on extraction yield, as well as the content of squalene, phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial activity were analyzed. The highest extraction yield (10.93 wt%) was obtained at 40 degrees C, 70% amplitude (525 W), and a solvent/sample ratio of 30 mL g-1. The extract obtained at 40 degrees C, ultrasound power at 525 W, and solvent/sample ratio of 10 mL g-1 showed a gallic acid equivalent (GAE) content of 52.95 mg per 100 g of extract and a concentration of 0.56 mg mL-1 required for 50% inhibition of DPPH radical. All extracts contained squalene, with the highest recorded concentration being 0.3795 g per 100 g of extract. Antimicrobial analysis revealed weak potential of the extracts against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains.

Summary: An ultrasound-assisted method was used to extract phenolic compounds from defatted black cumin seeds, and the optimal extraction conditions were determined to be an ethanol concentration of 59.1%, extraction temperature of 44.6 degrees C, and extraction time of 32.5 min. Under these conditions, the total phenolic content and DPPH radical scavenging activity increased significantly compared to conventional extraction. The HPLC-UV analysis showed that the black cumin seed extracts contained high levels of epicatechin and rutin. Ultrasound-assisted extraction is a useful method for recovering polyphenols from defatted black cumin seeds.

Summary: Expenditure isolation of lignin and the understanding of its structural variations during different isolation processes are crucial for the high-value utilization of lignin. This study proposed a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) consisting of choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and 4-chlorobenzene sulfonic acid for rapid lignin separation from poplar. The structural variations of DES lignin and its relationship with alkali pre-extraction of hemicellulose were investigated. The results showed that alkali pretreatment enhanced the DES separation of lignin and promoted the cleavage of specific linkages, resulting in reduced molecular weight and thermal stability of isolated DES lignin. Moreover, DES lignin obtained from integrated utilization displayed higher purity and S/G ratio compared to lignin obtained from direct DES treatment.
