ISSN / eISSN

Aims and Scope
Materials and Design publishes original research reports, review articles and express communications covering the studies of structure and properties of inorganic and organic materials, advances in synthesis, processing, characterisation and testing, design of materials and engineering systems, and applications in technology. The journal is multi-disciplinary in nature, and seeks to bring together aspects of materials science, engineering, physics, and chemistry. In exploring the themes ranging from materials to design, it also pursues the elucidation of underlying connections between natural and artificial, and experiment and modelling.Manuscripts submitted to Materials and Design are sought to contain elements of discovery and surprise that often accompany the obtention of new insights into the architecture and function of matter.

The first paper was published during my 15-year doctoral study. At that time, the process was relatively slow and it was not open source. It took about 5 months to be accepted, and I was very excited at the time! This was my first paper after starting work, so I had a relatively good understanding of the journal and had strong emotions towards it. The specific process is as follows:

616, 2021: Submitted
626, 2021: Under review
720, 2021: Received feedback with 24 comments from two reviewers. One of the experts differentiated between critical comments and general comments. The comments were direct and constructive.
810, 2021: Resubmitted
820, 2021: Under review again
912, 2021: Received further revisions. One of the reviewers was not satisfied with four of the modifications I made. I completed the revisions and submitted them on the same day.
917, 2021: Accepted
920, 2021: Published online

Overall, the process was relatively fast. It is important to be patient after submitting a paper and not to rush. Personally, I believe that the research level of this journal is not on par with Nature Communication and Acta Materialia. However, this journal has a good reputation and is highly recognized within my field. Its advantage lies in its high impact factor. Unlike the journal "Applied Surface Science," which received a warning last year, this journal did not. Furthermore, this journal should not be compared to the open access journals under MDPI.

The journal has already become completely open source. Some people say that open source is embracing the future, while others say that open source is not good. In fact, those who have submitted articles understand it well. Except for a few journals like Nature and Science, the quality of completely open source journals is generally lower than that of hybrid open source and non-open source journals. This is because completely open source journals already know that you will pay before you submit your manuscript, while hybrid open source and non-open source journals only ask if you want to make it open source after your article is accepted. Therefore, the quality of hybrid open source and non-open source journals is generally better than completely open source ones. This journal has a high impact factor and caters to Chinese preferences, but the quality of the articles is average. They charge around $2000-2500 per article. Our research group (at Jiaotong University in the field of additive manufacturing) used to keep submitting articles to this journal, but we stopped after it became open source. I see many people demanding to openly criticize articles, so why don't those who give positive reviews dare to publish their articles openly? If they believe the quality is good, they should share them for everyone to evaluate.
