Summary: The World Health Organization recognizes food fortification as a cost-effective and beneficial public health measure. Although micronutrient deficiencies are often overlooked in high-income countries, they can still be a significant public health problem. However, many high-income countries, including Israel, face barriers in adopting fortification due to various reasons.

Summary: When public health programs with single nutrients are perceived to have a poor impact, the policy response might be to layer additional mandatory programs, but caution is needed as excess intake of nutrients could be harmful. Unnecessary motivations for multiple intervention programs may stem from incorrect risk measurements and evaluation of nutrient deficiencies, and the financial and social costs of additional programs need to be carefully considered. Global consideration of layering multiple nutrient interventions without thoughtful social, biological, and ethical frameworks could be counterproductive.

Summary: There were no significant differences in anemia and markers of anemia between pre- and post-fortification periods in children in Ivory Coast, but the mean corpuscular volume significantly increased in the post-fortification period. The lack of significant differences in anemia indicators between the two periods requires further investigation.

Summary: Micronutrient deficiencies (MNDs) are a major public health challenge in the developing world, including India. Despite supplementation and fortification interventions, there are concerns about safety and effectiveness. A food-based approach, specifically dietary diversification, may be a long-term and sustainable strategy to address this issue.

Summary: The study demonstrated an efficient process of rice fortification through ultrasonic treatment and absorption of folic acid, which significantly increased the folate intake in rice. The fortified brown rice showed improved textural properties that are favorable for consumers.

Summary: This study investigated the dietary and supplementary intakes of folate, vitamin D, and iodine among pregnant women with obesity in the UK, revealing that only a small percentage of women met the recommended intakes, highlighting the need to raise awareness of the importance of supplementing these nutrients in women with obesity.

Summary: Inadequate folate intake during pregnancy is the leading cause of neural tube defects (NTDs) in newborns. The mandatory fortification of folic acid in processed cereals in the US has decreased the prevalence of NTDs and also had unintended benefits such as reducing anemia and the risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, there are potential issues with folic acid fortification that need to be monitored, such as the presence of unmetabolized folic acid and increased risk of cancer.

Summary: This study aims to estimate the trend and burden of neural tube defects in Eastern Ethiopia and investigate the epidemiological implications of the findings. The study found an increasing trend and burden of neural tube defects, with insignificant importance of preconception folic acid supplementation in the region. Therefore, it is recommended to consider preconception folic acid supplementation in conjunction with healthcare services to reduce the risk of neural tube defects in the region.

Summary: Diets lacking essential vitamins and minerals are prevalent worldwide. Food fortification with zinc, iron, and iodine through salt has been developed as a cost-effective solution. Incorporating zinc into the iron premix is a superior approach due to better fortificant stability. This technology is an economical public health measure for improving the health of populations with micronutrient deficiencies.

Summary: Developing a resilient food supply is crucial in delivering necessary nutrients to consumers and addressing micronutrient deficiencies that can lead to severe health issues. Therefore, focus should be on enhancing minerals and nutrients in food through various methods to improve the sustainability of the food system.

Summary: Women of childbearing age and pregnant women in high-income countries do not get sufficient folate intake from food sources alone and need to take folic acid supplements. However, most women taking folic acid supplements exceed the upper tolerable limit. Therefore, the recommendations and upper tolerable limit for folic acid supplements need to be reevaluated.

Summary: A study in São Paulo City, Brazil, investigated the association between inflammatory markers and unmetabolized folic acid (UMFA) in a population exposed to mandatory fortification. The results showed that higher UMFA concentrations were linked to lower levels of proinflammatory markers like TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, and IL-12. This suggests a connection between folate metabolism and inflammatory status in adults.

Summary: This study found that supplementation of folic acid and iron during pregnancy can reduce the risk of congenital heart disease in offspring. The study also confirmed a significant multiplicative interaction between folic acid and iron nutrition in reducing the risk of congenital heart disease in offspring.
