Summary: DFT calculations were used to study the mechanism of cascade hydrogenation-cyclization of levulinic acid into gamma-valerolactone catalyzed by half-sandwich iridium complexes. The study revealed that heterolytic hydrogen cleavage, concerted reduction, hydrogen migration, dehydration, and cyclization are key steps in the mechanism. Water acts as a hydrogen donor while counterions act as a hydrogen shuttle in the process. The presence of a double-methoxy group on the bipyridine ligand of the iridium complex increases electron density at the Ir center, leading to enhanced Ir-H bond cleavage.

Summary: Metallodrugs play a central role in the treatment and diagnosis of diseases, and the choice of ligands coordinated to the metal center is crucial for the biological activity of metal-based anticancer agents. Introducing bioactive ligands may lead to synergistic activity between the metal center and the ligand system, and Ru half-sandwich compounds are a promising class of anticancer agents that have been extensively studied.

Summary: In this study, four ruthenium complexes modified with selenium-ether were synthesized and showed excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The most active complex, Ru(II)-4, efficiently targeted the bacterial cell membrane, preventing drug resistance and inhibiting biofilm formation. In toxicity experiments, Ru(II)-4 exhibited low mammalian toxicity. In vivo tests using both G. mellonella wax worms and mouse skin infection models confirmed the potential of Ru(II)-4 as an effective antibacterial agent against S. aureus infections, with minimal toxicity to mouse tissue. These findings highlight the promising strategy of introducing selenium-atom into ruthenium compounds for developing interesting antibacterial agents.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis and characterization of two ruthenium(II) half-sandwich complexes (1 & BULL;PF6 and 2 & BULL;PF6) with phosphine-free ligands N-(pyridin-2-yl)quinolin-2-amine (L-1) and N-(4-methylpyridin-2-yl) quinolin-2-amine (L-1). The molecular structures of both complexes were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These complexes acted as excellent phosphine-free catalytic systems for the mild synthesis of aryl amines from nitroarenes using sodium borohydride in ethanol. Spectroscopic studies confirmed the intermediacy of [Ru-H], and the reduction showed good chemo selectivity in the presence of -COOH and -NHCOMe functionalities.

Summary: According to a report from WHO, there have been a staggering number of cases and deaths from COVID-19 worldwide. The spread of the virus is attributed to various factors, including the lack of detection kits and techniques, the presence of asymptomatic cases, and failures in mass screening. In this study, a simple and cost-effective method using a surface functionalized glassy carbon electrode was developed to rapidly detect the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.

Summary: A series of organometallic Re(I)(L)(CO)(3)Br complexes with 4'-substituted terpyridine ligands (L) were synthesised and used as electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction. The effect of substitution on the 4'-position of terpyridine on CO2 electroreduction was investigated. All complexes catalyse CO evolution in homogeneous organic media at moderate overpotentials with high faradaic yields. The influence of the pK(a) of the proton sources on the electrochemical catalytic activity was also demonstrated.
