Roundup Transorb (R) (RT) is a glyphosate-based herbicide and despite its wide use around the world there are few studies comparing the effects of the active ingredient with the formulated product. In this context the purpose of this study was to compare the genotoxicity of the active ingredient glyphosate with the formulated product RT in order to clarify whether the active ingredient and the surfactant of the RT formula may exert toxic effects on the DNA molecule in juveniles of fish Prochilodus lineatus. Erythrocytes and gill cells of fish exposed to glyphosate and to RT showed DNA damage scores significantly higher than control animals. These results revealed that both glyphosate itself and RT were genotoxic to gill cells and erythrocytes of P. lineatus, suggesting that their use should be carefully monitored considering their potential impact on tropical aquatic biota. Male strategies and mating behavior in the Neotropical bee Epicharis (Anepicharis) dejeanii (Apidae: Centridini)

Welber Costa Pina, Lenice Souza-Shibatta, Natalia Uemura, Andre Luiz Gobatto, Gabriele Antico Freiria, Silvia Helena Sofia

Summary: This study describes the mating behavior of Epicharis dejeanii and evaluates the reproductive strategies employed by males. The results show that males use different patrol strategies during mating, but both strategies are effective in copulation success. The study also reveals a correlation between patrol strategy and male body size.

Phytogeographic regions and geographic distance do not predict genetic structure in the orchid bee Euglossa cordata

Denilson Costa Martins, Patricia Maia Correia de Albuquerque, Jose Manuel Macario Rebelo, Thais Kotelok-Diniz, Silvia Helena Sofia, Wilson Frantine-Silva

Summary: This study investigated the genetic diversity and population structure of the orchid bee species E. cordata in different Brazilian biomes. The results suggest that local factors and historical factors, rather than vegetation or geographic distances, drive the observed genetic structure. These findings have important implications for the conservation of orchid bees.

Summary: Due to the increasing global demand for electricity, many countries have been seeking methods to diversify their power production. However, hydroelectric power plants still remain the predominant source in countries like Brazil, occupying important drainage systems. This study analyzed the genetic distribution of fish populations in the Upper Parana River basin by examining the DNA of non-migratory fish species upstream and downstream of three Small Hydroelectric Plants. The results indicate that Small Hydroelectric Plants have genetically subdivided fish populations, and other factors such as the number of plants and connectivity with undisturbed stretches of rivers can also influence genetic differentiation levels.

DNA polymerase eta protects human cells against DNA damage induced by the tumor chemotherapeutic temozolomide

Summary: This study investigates the effects of TMZ treatment on human XP-V cells and its complemented counterpart. The results show that pol eta plays a role in protecting human cells from TMZ-induced DNA damage, but this role may be different from its canonical TLS mechanism. This finding opens up new therapeutic possibilities of using pol eta as a target to improve the efficacy of TMZ-based cancer therapies.

Review on the sublethal effects of pure and formulated glyphosate on bees: Emphasis on social bees

Lucas Battisti, Michele Potrich, Everton Ricardi Lozano, Claudia Bueno dos Reis Martinez, Silvia Helena Sofia

Summary: Bees are declining worldwide, and pesticide use, including herbicides, has been found to negatively impact bees. Glyphosate (GLY) is the most sold pesticide and exposure to GLY can cause sublethal effects on bees. This study reviewed the literature on the sublethal effects of GLY and commercial formulations on bees. The findings showed that GLY exposure can alter gene expression, enzyme functioning, metabolism, tissue structure, microbiota diversity, learning, feeding, flight, circadian cycle, and body development in bees. Further research is needed to understand the long-term effects of GLY on bee colony homeostasis and the toxicity of surfactants in different commercial formulations.

Agricultural landscape influences on the solitary bees and wasps that nest in ecological restoration sites

Andre Luiz Gobatto, Patricia Nakayama Miranda, Natalia Uemura, Susanna Mendes Miranda, Welber Costa Pina, Silvia Helena Sofia

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of agricultural landscapes on the abundance and diversity of trap-nesting bees, wasps, and their natural enemies in restored areas. The results showed that monoculture agriculture had a negative impact on the abundance of wasps and their natural enemies, while bee diversity was negatively related to the distance from the edge of reforestation to the nearest forest fragment. The findings suggest that the characteristics of the surrounding landscape should be considered in restoration projects to maximize the effectiveness of ecological services.

Exploring pradimicin-IRD antineoplastic mechanisms and related DNA repair pathways

Larissa Costa de Almeida, Felipe Antunes Calil, Natalia Cestari Moreno, Paula Rezende-Teixeira, Luiz Alberto Beraldo de Moraes, Paula Christine Jimenez, Carlos Frederico Martins Menck, Joao Agostinho Machado-Neto, Leticia Veras Costa-Lotufo

Summary: DNA-targeting agents have clinical significance in anticancer chemotherapy, but their widespread use is limited due to toxicity. This study used in silico modeling and transcriptomics to characterize the DNA repair pathways activated by pradimicin-IRD treatment. Pradimicin-IRD was found to be a DNA intercalating agent and can potentially inhibit DNA-binding proteins. Genes related to DNA repair functions were modulated by pradimicin-IRD, providing insights for further research on this compound as a new antineoplastic agent.

Summary: This study reveals that Pleistocene climate fluctuations have influenced the population structure of the orchid bee species, and the genetic structure aligns with the climatic models. Population expansion occurred after the Last Glacial Maximum. The genetic structure of Euglossa annectans in this area is reported for the first time.
