Galactofuranose metabolism is a good target for the development of novel chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of some microbial infections. A simple procedure for the synthesis of methyl (methyl alpha,beta-D-galactopyranosid)uronate followed by NaB(3)H(4) reduction gave a straightforward access to radiolabeled substrates for galactofuranosidases. Structural insights in galectin-1-glycan recognition: Relevance of the glycosidic linkage and the N-acetylation pattern of sugar moieties

Cecilia Porciuncula-Gonzalez, Alejandro J. Cagnoni, Carolina Fontana, Karina Marino, Patricia Saenz-Mendez, Cecilia Giacomini, Gabriela Irazoqui

Summary: This study evaluated the binding affinity of Gal-1 for various galactosides, showing weaker affinity for beta-(1->6) galactosides compared to beta-(1->4) and beta-(1->3) galactosides. Docking experiments revealed key interactions between Gal-1 and specific amino acid residues of evaluated galactosides, contributing to the understanding of galectin-glycan affinity.

Control of intestinal inflammation by glycosylation-dependent lectin-driven immunoregulatory circuits

Luciano G. Morosi, Anabela M. Cutine, Alejandro J. Cagnoni, Montana N. Manselle-Cocco, Diego O. Croci, Joaquin P. Merlo, Rosa M. Morales, Maria May, Juan M. Perez-Saez, Maria R. Girotti, Santiago P. Mendez-Huergo, Betiana Pucci, Anibal H. Gil, Sergio P. Huernos, Guillermo H. Docena, Alicia M. Sambuelli, Marta A. Toscano, Gabriel A. Rabinovich, Karina Marino

Summary: The study reveals a glycosylation-dependent on-off circuit controlled by Galectin-1 (Gal1) and its glycosylated ligands which target activated CD8(+) T cells and shape cytokine profile to maintain intestinal homeostasis. In patients with inflammatory bowel disease, increased Gal1 is associated with dysregulated expression of glycosyltransferases C2GNT1 and ST6GAL1. This provides insights into the role of Gal1 and its glycosylated ligands in recalibrating T cell immunity to preserve intestinal homeostasis.

Rapid pore expansion of mesoporous silica-based materials using microwave irradiation and pore swelling agents

A. Bordoni, M. Lombardo, A. Wolosiuk

Summary: In this study, the use of microwave radiation as a postsynthesis treatment for expanding the pore size of non-calcined SiO2-based mesoporous materials was analyzed. Compared to traditional hydrothermal treatments, microwave irradiation significantly reduces the processing time and is compatible with various surfactant pore templates. This approach allows for easy postprocessing of non-calcined templated siliceous materials and customization of their final pore dimensions.

Summary: The study found that systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with thrombocytopenia have abnormalities in platelet clearance and production, mainly due to apoptosis and desialylation leading to low platelet count. These abnormalities are more frequently observed in patients with thrombocytopenia and active disease.

Galectin-1 Cooperates with Yersinia Outer Protein (Yop) P to Thwart Protective Immunity by Repressing Nitric Oxide Production

Brenda Lucila Jofre, Ricardo Javier Elicabe, Juan Eduardo Silva, Juan Manuel Perez Saez, Maria Daniela Paez, Eduardo Callegari, Karina Valeria Marino, Maria Silvia Di Genaro, Gabriel Adrian Rabinovich, Roberto Carlos Davicino

Summary: Galactin-1 (Gal1) binds to Yops in a carbohydrate-dependent manner, protecting them from trypsin digestion. Gal1 and YopP cooperatively inhibit nitric oxide (NO) production, without influencing other inflammatory mediators. In Yersinia enterocolitica infection, Gal1 and YopP play a coordinated role in modulating macrophage function.

d-Allose, a rare sugar. Synthesis of d-allopyranosyl acceptors from glucose, and their regioselectivity in glycosidation reactions

Enrique A. Del Vigo, Carlos A. Stortz, Carla Marino

Summary: This paper focuses on the regioselectivity in glycosidation reactions of d-allose glycopyranosyl acceptors. The results show that axial O-3 is the preferred site for glycosylation of alpha-anomers, while equatorial O-4 is the preferred site for beta-anomers. The experimental results are in good agreement with molecular modeling.
