P>The absorbance of melanin content from dorsal feathers was compared between wild-type Japanese quail and nine other quail plumage colours determined by single mutations in one of seven genes: extended brown (MC1R), yellow (ASIP), silver (MITF), lavender (MLPH), roux (TYRP1), imperfect albinism (SLC45A2) and rusty. As compared with wild-type quail, all mutations but extended brown decreased total melanins. The largest decrease was observed in quail with one of the dilution mutations at TYRP1, MLPH or SLCA45A2. No difference in eumelanins was found between the 10 plumage colours. Despite visible colour differences, homozygous and heterozygous mutants at MITF, or the two imperfect albino (white) and cinnamon (pale yellow) alleles at SLC45A2, could not be differentiated on the basis of melanins. In contrast, the two white phenotypes caused by mutations at MITF and SLC45A2, or the two reddish plumage colours caused by the roux and rusty non-allelic mutations had different total melanin contents. The results showed that rusty was not likely to be a dilution mutation.

Chemical Recycling of Plastic Marine Litter: First Analytical Characterization of The Pyrolysis Oil and of Its Fractions and Comparison with a Commercial Marine Gasoil

Gian Claudio Faussone, Teresa Cecchi

Summary: A detailed molecular fingerprint of raw pyrolysis oil from plastic wastes is obtained for the first time, with a focus on the chemical recycling of plastic marine litter. The most represented peak in the chemical signature of marine litter pyrolysis samples is 2,4-dimethyl-1-heptene, a marker of PP pyrolysis, which differentiates commercial and pyrolysis marine gasoil. Comparisons between the two reveal a significant overlap in their molecular fingerprints, with differences in the relative abundance of saturated hydrocarbons and unsaturated compounds. The gasoil derived from marine litter meets ISO8217 standards, while the virgin naphtha contains important recoverable platform chemicals.

Recovery of gold from e-waste via food waste byproducts

Teresa Cecchi, Zhaojing Gao, Christophe Clement, Anthony Camus, Andrew Karim, Olivier Girard, Clara Santato

Summary: In this study, a chemically rational and environmentally friendly method was proposed for the recovery of non-leaching gold from e-waste using aqueous chemistry with hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid. The recovered gold was obtained in the form of flakes through the oxidation of base metals and subsequent filtration. The method also generates a relevant metal oxide byproduct for solar energy conversion applications.

A new and efficient lactic acid polymerization by multimetallic cerium complexes: a poly(lactic acid) suitable for biomedical applications

Genny Pastore, Serena Gabrielli, Teresa Cecchi, Arianna Giuliani, Cristina Cimarelli, Alessandro Menchi, Enrico Marcantoni

Summary: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a compostable and biocompatible polymer used in various industries such as disposable products, biomedical applications, and packaging. A novel and eco sustainable catalyst CeCl3·7H2O-NaI has been demonstrated to be highly valuable and non-toxic towards PLLA synthesis, showing how antibacterial properties of cerium ions can be utilized in biomaterials engineering. With successful high-yield synthesis of poly(lactic acid), this study has shown the potential for innovative and environmentally friendly approaches in polyester synthesis.
