This study investigated the relation between positive and negative experiences of social support and mortality in a population-based sample. Data were derived from Dutch men and women aged 20-59 years who participated in the Doetinchem Cohort Study in 1987-1991. Social support was measured at baseline and after 5 years of follow-up by using the Social Experiences Checklist indicating positive (n = 11,163) and negative (n = 11,161) experiences of support. Mortality data were obtained from 1987 until 2008. Cox proportional hazards regression models, adjusted for age and sex, showed that low positive experiences of support at baseline were associated with an increased mortality risk after, on average, 19 years of follow-up (hazard ratio = 1.26, 95% confidence interval: 1.04, 1.52). Even after additional adjustment for socioeconomic factors, lifestyle factors, and indicators of health status, the increased mortality risk remained statistically significant (hazard ratio = 1.23, 95% confidence interval: 1.01, 1.49). For participants with repeated measurements of social support at 5-year intervals, a stable low level of positive experiences of social support was associated with a stronger increase in age- and sex-adjusted mortality risk (hazard ratio = 1.57, 95% confidence interval: 1.03, 2.39). Negative experiences of social support were not related to mortality.

Impact of magnesium on bone health in older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Inge Groenendijk, Marieke van Delft, Pieter Versloot, Luc J. C. van Loon, Lisette C. P. G. M. de Groot

Summary: Higher magnesium intake is positively associated with increased hip and femoral neck bone mineral density in older adults. However, more well-designed cohort studies and randomized controlled trials are needed to further confirm the relationship and whether magnesium supplementation can improve bone health. The combination of multiple bone nutrients may be necessary for optimal effects on bone health and to prevent or delay the development of osteoporosis.

Ingestion of an ample amount of meat substitute based on a lysine-enriched, plant-based protein blend stimulates postprandial muscle protein synthesis to a similar extent as an isonitrogenous amount of chicken in healthy, young men

Summary: The study found that a lysine-enriched plant-based protein product can stimulate postprandial muscle protein synthesis rates to a similar extent as an isonitrogenous amount of chicken. Despite differences in amino acid contents between plant-based and animal-based proteins, they have similar effects on muscle protein synthesis in healthy, young men.

The Effect of Food Odor Exposure on Appetite and Nutritional Intake of Older Adults with Dementia

Summary: This study investigated the effects of food odor exposure on appetite, nutritional intake, and body weight of Dutch nursing home residents with dementia. The results showed that while there were some changes in appetite and nutritional intake after odor exposure, they were not clinically significant. Future studies should evaluate the impact of natural food odors and/or meal-tailored odors on nutritional intake in older adults with dementia.

Summary: A large genome-wide association study of more than 5 million individuals reveals that 12,111 independent SNPs account for nearly all the heritability of height attributable to common genetic variants. These SNPs are clustered within non-overlapping genomic segments and the phenotypic variance explained varies across populations.

Summary: This study evaluated the risk of malnutrition and characteristics of oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) in patients with chronic post-stroke OD, and the relationship between OD severity and functional oral intake and dysphagia-specific quality of life. The study found that moderate to severe OD and moderate to high risk of malnutrition were common in this population of stroke patients.

The Association of Vitamin D Status with Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia Subtypes: A Cross-Sectional Analysis in Dutch Geriatric Outpatients

Summary: This study investigated the association between 25(OH)D levels and different types of dementia in a geriatric outpatient population in the Netherlands. The results showed that both AD and VaD patients had lower levels of 25(OH)D compared to individuals without dementia, while there were no significant differences in 25(OH)D levels between MCI and other types of dementia patients and individuals without dementia.

Summary: This study found an association between total and animal protein intake with higher bone mineral density (BMD), while plant protein intake was associated with lower BMD. In individuals with adequate calcium intake and sufficient vitamin D levels, the association between total and animal protein intake with BMD was stronger. Protein supplementation did not lead to significant improvements in BMD.

Summary: This study explored the potential correlations between serum vitamin D levels and cognitive/behavioral symptoms in Alzheimer's disease patients. The results showed that vitamin D deficiency was highly prevalent in AD patients, and it was positively associated with serum serotonin levels and inversely correlated with CSF amyloid-beta levels. This suggests that vitamin D may play a role in the pathophysiology of AD.
