The aim of this study was to evaluate ultrastructural changes in kidney and liver tissue of chicken embryos exposed in ovo to cadmium. Embryonated eggs were injected on the 4th day of incubation with cadmium at the dose of 0, 2, 4 and 8 mu g/egg (80 eggs/group). The samples of kidney and liver tissues were collected from embryos at the 14th and 18th day of incubation (E14 and E18) and at hatching day (D1). The tissue structure was evaluated by transmission electron microscopy (Tecnai G2 Spirit). The results indicate that hepatocytes responded to damage caused by toxic cadmium activity with a significant disturbance in the structure of mitochondria and a considerable expansion of the lysososmal system, while glomerular cells additionally reacted with an increased proliferation of peroxisomes. The range of changes observed on the subcellular level was dependent on the dose of cadmium, embryogenesis stage and cell type.

An Elementary Proof of Phase Transition in the Planar XY Model

Diederik van Engelenburg, Marcin Lis

Summary: In this study, a power-law lower bound on the two-point function of the planar XY spin model at low temperatures is obtained using elementary methods. This result, initially rigorously derived by Frohlich and Spencer (1981), establishes a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition in the model. The argument relies on a new loop representation of spin correlations, recent research on delocalisation of general integer-valued height functions, and classical correlation inequalities.

Lysosomes as a Target of Anticancer Therapy

Wojciech Trybus, Ewa Trybus, Teodora Krol

Summary: Lysosomes are organelles that contain acidic hydrolases and play a crucial role in cellular degradation and homeostasis. They are involved in autophagy and various cell death pathways, including lysosomal and apoptotic death. Compounds such as lysosomotropic compounds, antihistamines, DNA-damaging drugs, and chemotherapeutics can induce lysosomal membrane permeability, promoting lysosomal-mediated cell death. Combining lysosomotropic compounds with autophagy modulators may be a promising approach in cancer treatment and overcoming chemoresistance.

The Antioxidant, Antibacterial and Anti-Biofilm Properties of Rapeseed Creamed Honey Enriched with Selected Plant Superfoods

Michal Milek, Ewa Ciszkowicz, Ewelina Sidor, Joanna Heclik, Katarzyna Lecka-Szlachta, Malgorzata Dzugan

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of selected fruits and herbs, categorized as superfoods, on the bioactivity of rapeseed honey. Flavored creamed honeys with different additives were prepared and analyzed for their phenols, flavonoids, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. The study also examined the antioxidant properties after three months of storage. Results showed a significant dose-dependent increase in bioactive ingredients and antioxidant capacity in spiced honeys compared to the control. The addition of sea buckthorn leaves and black raspberry fruits had the highest enrichment.

Tracking of Thermal, Physicochemical, and Biological Parameters of a Long-Term Stored Honey Artificially Adulterated with Sugar Syrups

Monika Tomczyk, Anna Czerniecka-Kubicka, Michal Milek, Ewelina Sidor, Malgorzata Dzugan

Summary: The study evaluated the changes in thermal characteristics, physicochemical parameters, antioxidant, and enzymatic activity of honey subjected to artificial adulteration. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to detect honey adulteration, and specific glass transitions (TG) were observed in adulterated honeys in the range of 34-38.05 degrees C, with additional T(g)s observed for honeys adulterated by syrup only (-19.5 degrees C to 4.10 degrees C) and honeys adulterated by invert (50.4-57.6 degrees C). These specific TG can be useful for detecting honey adulteration and identifying the adulterant used.

Free boundary dimers: random walk representation and scaling limit

Nathanael Berestycki, Marcin Lis, Wei Qian

Summary: We study the dimer model on subgraphs of the square lattice with unmatched vertices on a prescribed part of the boundary, called monomers, contributing to the total weight of the configuration. A bijection relates this model to a standard dimer model on a non-bipartite graph. The Kasteleyn matrix describes a walk with negative transition weights along the free boundary, but under certain assumptions, an effective random walk representation for the inverse Kasteleyn matrix is proved in the infinite volume limit.

Assessing the Antimicrobial Properties of Honey Protein Components through In Silico Comparative Peptide Composition and Distribution Analysis

Andrzej Lyskowski, Michal Milek, Malgorzata Dzugan

Summary: The availability of reference proteomes for two honeybee species allows for in silico study of protein fractions related to honey's antimicrobial activity. Using a database of established antimicrobial peptides, protein components with similar sequences were identified and analyzed. The results show conserved localization of antimicrobial peptide sequences in a limited number of protein components. The composition of the antibacterial peptides identified in the proteomes of both species is also found to be similar.
