Summary: Sorghum landraces exhibit significant variation in agronomical and biochemical traits. Some landraces show advantages in maturity and thousand seed weight. Seed color, seed weight, and collection area affect biochemical traits such as total tannin content, total phenolic content, and antioxidant activities. Landraces with superior traits could be ideal candidates for sorghum breeding programs.

Summary: The foliar application of salicylic acid has been shown to improve sorghum growth under saline conditions by regulating plant metabolism and antioxidant capacity. A concentration of 150 mg/L of salicylic acid was found to be most effective for alleviating the adverse effects of salt stress, while a concentration of 100 mg/L was most effective for improving sorghum growth under non-saline conditions.

Summary: This study evaluated the suitability of the Romanian Albanus hybrid of Sorghum bicolor as a potential functional food ingredient using ultrasound-assisted extraction and chromatographic methods. The total phenolic and flavonoid content as well as antioxidant activity of ungerminated sorghum grains were closely related to the Total Phenolic Content (TPC) after 36 hours of germination in both methanolic and ethanolic extracts. The study findings demonstrated a strong correlation between the TPC of sorghum extracts and their antioxidant activity, indicating the benefits of using Sorghum bicolor grains in food applications.

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.

Summary: The potential of multi-layer nanoemulsions for improving the cellular uptake, antioxidant activity, and in vitro bioaccessibility of alpha-tocopherol was examined. The results showed that the multi-layer nanoemulsions significantly enhanced the cellular uptake and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol compared to free coumarin 6. Furthermore, the use of chitosan and dextran sulfate as wall materials in the multi-layer nanoemulsions led to even higher cellular uptake, in vitro bioaccessibility, and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol.
