Ready-to-eat fresh cut produce are exposed to pre- and postharvest abiotic stresses during the production chain. Our work aimed to identify stress responsive genes as new molecular markers of quality that can be widely applied to leaves and fruits and easily determined at any stage of the production chain. Stress responsive genes associated with quality losses were isolated in rocket and melon fresh-cut produce and their expression levels analyzed by quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR) at different time points after harvest at 20 degrees C and 4 degrees C. qRT-PCR results were supported by correlation analysis with physiological and biochemical determinations evaluated at the same conditions such as chlorophyll a fluorescence indices, total, reducing sugars, sucrose, ethylene, ascorbic acid, lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species. In both species the putative molecular markers increased their expression soon after harvest suggesting a possible use as novel and objective quality markers of fresh-cut produces. First report of enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus argenteus as a foodborne pathogen

Marina Cavaiuolo, Donatien Lefebvre, Isabelle Mutel, Noemie Vingadassalon, Deborah Merda, Jacques-Antoine Hennekinne, Yacine Nia

Summary: In this study, two coagulase-positive non-pigmented staphylococci involved in separate outbreaks were characterized as Staphylococcus argenteus by whole genome sequencing. Enterotoxin genes were analyzed in the genomes and their expression was determined in laboratory medium and artificially-contaminated milk samples. The study sheds light on the enterotoxigenic properties of S. argenteus and highlights the importance of monitoring it as an emerging foodborne pathogen.

Molecular Responses of Vegetable, Ornamental Crops, and Model Plants to Salinity Stress

Stefania Toscano, Daniela Romano, Antonio Ferrante

Summary: Vegetable and ornamental plants lack salt-tolerant mechanisms and their response to salinity stress needs to be investigated due to their cultivation conditions and product requirements. The tolerance mechanisms involve ion compartmentalization, compatible solute production, synthesis of specific proteins and metabolites, and induction of transcriptional factors. This review evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of studying salt tolerance mechanisms in vegetable and ornamental plants and aims to identify effective tools for screening salt tolerance levels. The findings can contribute to germplasm selection and breeding activities.

New Strategies to Increase the Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Woody Ornamental Plants in Mediterranean Climate

Luca Leotta, Stefania Toscano, Antonio Ferrante, Daniela Romano, Alessandra Francini

Summary: The native flora of Mediterranean countries, especially woody shrubs, has been widely recognized for their ornamental potential. The adaptability of native shrubs to abiotic stresses has recently been examined for the realization of ornamental green areas. Tolerance to abiotic stress in Mediterranean climate can improve the ecosystem services of these plants in urban environments. This review analyzes the possibility of identifying different plant species' mechanisms to tolerate or avoid stresses, as well as the potential to enhance abiotic stress tolerance through genetic and agronomic strategies.

Comparison of the Growth, Physio-Biochemical Characteristics, and Quality Indices in Soilless-Grown Strawberries under Greenhouse and Open-Field Conditions

Jalil Rahim Doust, Mohammad Javad Nazarideljou, Mousa Arshad, Antonio Ferrante

Summary: Soilless cultivation, specifically in an open-field (OF) setting, is found to be superior to greenhouse (GH) cultivation in terms of fruit quality, antioxidant capacity, and post-harvest shelf-life, despite the decrease in fruit growth and yield. This study highlights the potential of OF soilless cultivation as a viable approach for strawberry production, emphasizing the importance of considering qualitative aspects and the nutritional value in addition to yield. Further exploration and optimization of soilless cultivation techniques in OF settings could contribute to the advancement of sustainable horticultural practices.

Investigating physiological responses of Wild Rocket subjected to artificial Ultraviolet B irradiation

Awais Ali, Giulia Franzoni, Alice Petrini, Piero Santoro, Jacopo Mori, Antonio Ferrante, Giacomo Cocetta

Summary: Utilization of UV-B radiation can induce the accumulation of phytochemicals in plants, promoting secondary metabolites accumulation in wild rocket. High intensity UV-B radiation decreases chlorophyll and carotenoid concentration, and causes damage to plant membranes. However, successive exposure to varying UV-B doses leads to increased accumulation of phenolics, anthocyanins, and glucosinolates, along with increased total sugars and sucrose buildup.

Mechanism of aroma enhancement methods in accelerating Congou black tea acidification subjected to room temperature storage

Zixuan Xie, De Zhang, Junyu Zhu, Qianqian Luo, Jun Liu, Jingtao Zhou, Xiaoyong Wang, Yuqiong Chen, Zhi Yu, Dejiang Ni

Summary: This study investigated the acidification of aroma-enhanced black tea during storage. Analysis of non-volatile substances and organic acids using UPLC-Q-TOF/MS and HPLC revealed a decrease in soluble sugars and amino acids, while an increase in organic acids such as oxalic acid, malic acid, and quinic acid. In vitro experiments further demonstrated that the acidification is a result of the decomposition of sugars and amino acids by heating, as well as the oxidation of aromatic aldehydes. Additionally, the study showed that the taste composition of tea infusion is altered, with reduced amino acids, catechins, soluble sugars, and flavonoids. This research provides a theoretical basis for improving the quality of black tea.
