Summary: This study aims to develop adventitious and hairy roots from Linum lewisi and evaluate their suitability for large-scale production of lignans, including justicidin B. The results indicate that these cultures have higher justicidin B production compared to other Linum species cultures, and the production can be further increased with elicitation.

Summary: In this study, hairy root cultures of the traditional Southeast Asian medicinal plant Polyscias filicifolia were successfully established, and their biosynthetic potential was enhanced through methyl jasmonate elicitation. The hairy root extracts showed significant antigenotoxic and anti-photogenotoxic activities.

Summary: MeJA treatment had different effects on the content of steroids and triterpenoids in two genetically different hairy root lines of Taxus x media. The metabolic response to treatment also showed differences between the two lines, but there were common metabolic features.

Summary: Hairy roots grown in vitro, particularly from black carrot, were used in this study for their ability to accumulate anthocyanin. By modulating growth medium composition and H2O2 elicitation, anthocyanin accumulation and biomass production were enhanced. Elicitation with H2O2 led to increased superoxide dismutase activity and anthocyanin accumulation in the hairy roots.

Summary: Hairy root cultures are valuable sources of phytochemicals, and Salvia bulleyana root culture is a promising source of rosmarinic acid. The study found that methyl jasmonate was the most effective elicitor for enhancing phenolic production. The elicited culture showed strong antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial properties.

Summary: This study evaluated the stability of phytoecdysteroid (PE) biosynthesis and the impact of methyl jasmonate (MJ) on the accumulation of PE over 25 subculture cycles of Silene linicola hairy roots. Significant changes were observed in the biosynthesis levels of PEs, particularly 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) and turkesterone, during prolonged cultivation. The application of MJ altered the composition of PEs, with turkesterone becoming the major component during the 9th subculture cycle.

Summary: Rhizobium rhizogenes-mediated plant hairy root induction is a convenient method for studying root-specific gene function. In this study, we developed an optimized tobacco hairy root induction system using different R. rhizogenes strains and media. We found that the strain LBA9402 exhibited the highest induction rate and could also deliver foreign genes to hairy roots. Overexpression of the MsSPL12 gene significantly increased nicotine production in transgenic hairy roots. Our results suggest that this system could be used for efficient manipulation of tobacco nicotine biosynthesis.

Summary: Recent studies have found strong connections between epigenetic modulation and secondary metabolites in plants. In this study, the effects of the DNA methylation inhibitor 5-azacytidine (5-Az) on secondary metabolite production, gene expression, and DNA methylation levels were investigated in the hairy roots of the medicinal plant Salvia miltiorrhiza. Results showed that the content of tanshinones, a type of secondary metabolite, increased by 1.5-5 times in the hairy roots treated with 5-Az. The methylation pattern in the promoter region of the gene encoding copalyl diphosphate synthase (CPS) was altered during 5-Az treatment, and several transcription factor binding sites were identified. This study provides evidence for a possible mechanism of DNA methylation in regulating tanshinone biosynthesis in the hairy roots of S. miltiorrhiza.

Summary: This study reported the green synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles using ethanolic extracts of Artemisia tilesii Ledeb 'hairy' roots. The chemical composition and reducing power of the extracts were found to influence the morphology, size distribution, and other features of the obtained nanoparticles. The synthesized nanoparticles demonstrated excellent magnetic characteristics and showed high adsorption capacity for copper, cadmium, and arsenic pollutants. The nanoparticles were also found to be minimally aggregated and well-dispersed in aqueous medium. Additionally, the nanoparticles did not exhibit inhibitory activity in vitro, indicating their potential use in adsorption technologies.
