Autonomy-connectedness mediates sex differences in symptoms of psychopathology

Abstract

Objectives This study aimed to examine if autonomy-connectedness, capacity for self-governance under the condition of connectedness, would mediate sex differences in symptoms of various mental disorders (depression, anxiety, eating disorders, antisocial personality disorder). Method Participants (N = 5,525) from a representative community sample in the Netherlands filled out questionnaires regarding the variables under study. Results Autonomy-connectedness (self-awareness, SA; sensitivity to others, SO; capacity for managing new situations, CMNS) fully mediated the sex differences in depression and anxiety, and partly in eating disorder -(drive for thinness, bulimia, and body dissatisfaction) and antisocial personality disorder characteristics. The mediations followed the expected sex-specific patterns. SO related positively to the internalizing disorder indices, and negatively to the anti-social personality disorder. SA related negatively to all disorder indices; and CMNS to all internalizing disorder indices, but positively to the anti-social personality disorder. Conclusion Treatment of depression, anxiety, but also eating disorders and the antisocial personality disorder may benefit from a stronger focus on autonomy strengthening.

Hippocampal Estrogen Signaling Mediates Sex Differences in Retroactive Interference

Summary: This study found that male mice are more susceptible to memory loss induced by retroactive interference than females. Estrogen signaling involving estrogen receptor alpha activation in the dorsal hippocampus mediates the resistance of female mice to retroactive interference. Female mice showed higher phosphorylation levels of ERK1/2 in the hippocampus following retroactive interference. Inhibition of ERK1/2 made female mice more prone to retroactive interference.

Sex Differences in the Behavioural Outcomes of Prenatal Nicotine and Tobacco Exposure

Summary: Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death worldwide, and women are more susceptible to nicotine addiction and face greater difficulty quitting. Smoking during pregnancy has significant health implications, including an increased risk of behavioral disorders. There are gender-specific behavioral outcomes related to smoking in adolescence and adulthood, and it is likely that the same applies to gestational nicotine or tobacco exposure. With the rise of vaping as a perceived safer alternative to cigarettes, especially among pregnant women, further research is required to understand the sex-dependent behavioral outcomes of prenatal nicotine exposure.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the impact of gender differences in bipolar disorder (BD) patients. The results showed that women had higher scores in psychopathological features, including higher total scores in Mania Rating Scale (MRS) and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 items (BIS-11), as well as higher scores in anxious temperament. Men had a higher prevalence of DSM-5 mixed features. Women reported longer duration of untreated illness (DUI). In terms of treatment response, women showed poorer response to anticonvulsants.

Sex related differences in nonmotor symptoms of patients with idiopathic blepharospasm

Female patients have a higher proportion of multiple NMS domains affected. Quality of life is associated with depression, anxiety and motor severity for female patients, and with depression, excessive daytime sleepiness and motor severity for male patients.

Summary: Childhood maltreatment is a major risk factor for the development of major depressive disorder (MDD), but the underlying neurobiological mechanism is unclear. This study found specific neural connectivity abnormalities between childhood maltreatment and depressive symptoms, primarily in the frontal-limbic system and involving self-regulation and cognitive processing circuits. Furthermore, the strength of functional connectivity mediated the association between different types of childhood maltreatment, especially abuse and neglect, and depressive symptoms. These findings provide important insights into the pathological mechanism of CM-induced depressive symptoms.

The relationship between sensory reactivity differences and mental health symptoms in preschool-age autistic children

Summary: This study explores the relationship between sensory reactivity and mental health symptoms in preschool-aged autistic children. The results show that externalizing mental health symptoms are related to sensory seeking, while internalizing mental health symptoms are related to sensory hyper-reactivity. Additionally, the study reveals that the relationship between internalizing symptoms and sensory hyper-reactivity is particularly driven by autistic preschoolers who use few to no words.

Associations between lifestyle factors and multidimensional frailty: a cross-sectional study among community-dwelling older people

Summary: The relation between religiosity and well-being was investigated using a new cross-cultural dataset, and the results showed that most teams reported a positive relationship, with religiosity being associated with higher levels of well-being. Additionally, the results indicated that the relation between religiosity and well-being varied depending on the cultural norms of religion.

How do psychology researchers interpret the results of multiple replication studies?

Summary: Using two vignette studies, the researchers investigated how psychology researchers interpret the results of four experiments testing a theory. The studies found that participants' belief in the theory increased with the number of statistically significant results. Additionally, the effect of a direct replication on belief in the theory was stronger than a conceptual replication. The findings highlight the need for improved statistical education in the field of psychology.

Influence of Sense of Competence, Empathy and Relationship Quality on Burden in Dementia Caregivers: A 15 Months Longitudinal Study

Summary: This study aims to explore the trajectory of caregiver burden and its relationship with caregiver and contextual factors. The results show that caregiver burden is linked to disruptions in the caregiver's own usual activities and physical health complaints. Caregivers with a high sense of competence experience lower burden throughout the caregiving process.
