Summary: This study investigated the use of cellulose nanocrystals and nanoclays as reinforcing fillers in starch ester films. The addition of nanofillers significantly improved the yield strength of the films, with enhancements of up to 112% for CNC and 173% for nanoclay. The films also showed improvements in light transmission and weight loss when compared to unfilled films.

Summary: Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) based composites supported by clay mineral substrates show promise for the in-situ remediation of groundwater and soils contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons. The nZVI-B nanocomposite, with higher reactivity and efficiency for TCE removal compared to pure nZVI, demonstrates the potential for use in permeable reactive barriers for contaminated field sites while minimizing reduction of soil-bearing capacity.

Summary: The search for effective and cost-efficient adsorbents for PFAS contamination has led to the evaluation of a novel surface modified organoclay (SMC) adsorbent compared to granular activated carbon (GAC) and ion exchange resin (IX) for the treatment of different PFAS impaired waters. Results showed that IX exhibited the best performance in terms of adsorbent use rates and was more effective than GAC and SMC in treating PFOA from various water sources excluding groundwater. Cost analysis indicated that treatment of landfill leachate and membrane concentrate was more expensive than groundwaters or wastewaters.

Summary: This study investigates the Na2CO3 activation of calcium bentonite clay and evaluates the influence of different conditions on its ion exchange capacity. The results demonstrate that the concentration of Na2CO3, activation temperature, and activation time significantly affect the ion exchange capacity and Na/Ca ratio of the clay. The experimental findings further confirm the structural and property changes of the calcium bentonite clay after activation.

Summary: The use of mineral clays as alternative adsorbent has been explored due to their physicochemical characteristics and low cost. In this study, expanded vermiculite and sodium-modified vermiculite were evaluated for their adsorption capacity and ion exchange of Cd2+ ions. The sodification process successfully increased the ion exchange capacity of the modified clay, resulting in higher adsorptive capacity and faster kinetics for Cd2+ removal. Despite the decrease in surface area after sodification, the modified adsorbent showed a significant increase in adsorptive capacity.

Summary: Binary bentonite-water and ternary cement-bentonite-water systems were prepared to enhance the stability of fresh cement slurry for promoting bentonite as a low-cost viscosity modifying admixture. The interlayer ions of bentonite played crucial roles in improving the stability of cement slurry, and the performance of Ca2+ bentonite can be enhanced by introducing Li+. The effect of bentonite on the stability of cement slurry and its influencing mechanism were proposed based on the experimental results.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a growing interest in dietary and pharmacological agents that inhibit cholesterol intestinal absorption. These compounds have various mechanisms to inhibit cholesterol absorption, such as affecting cholesterol solubilization, interfering with cholesterol diffusion, and inhibiting molecular mechanisms responsible for cholesterol absorption. This study investigated the characterization of different clays and their cholesterol adsorption capacity. The results showed that MMT Nanoclay has the highest cation exchange capacity and lowest Z potential, while MMT K10 and K30 have the highest cholesterol adsorption due to their high surface area. Isothermal studies also suggested that MMT allows for multilayer adsorption of cholesterol through hydrophobic sites.

Summary: Permeability tests using a flexible wall permeameter were conducted to investigate the impact of bentonite-HDTMA on the permeability of Loess, a potential lining material for solid waste landfills. The results revealed that compacted Loess from the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River in China did not meet the required impermeability standards for landfill liners. However, the permeability of Loess mixed with more than 10% bentonite ratio was significantly lower than the acceptable limit. The addition of a small amount of HDTMA slightly increased the permeability of Loess, but a certain ratio of bentonite-HDTMA still ensured impermeability.

Summary: In this study, the diffusion of caesium (Cs+) in smectite-rich natural clay saturated with different exchange ions (Na+, K+) was investigated. It was found that Cs+ diffusion was faster in K+-saturated clay compared to Na+-clay. This was rationalised by considering the stacking of clay platelets and the microstructural details of the clay in relation to Cs+ diffusion characteristics.

Summary: The study demonstrated that using chitosan-based biodegradable bags during cold storage can delay mango ripening, maintain fruit quality parameters, and reduce weight loss, respiration rate, and anthracnose incidence. This suggests that chitosan-based bags are an eco-friendly and effective method to preserve the postharvest quality of 'Palmer' mangoes during cold storage.
