Summary: A solvent-free Oil Red O deposition method for developing greasy fingermarks is proposed in this paper. The performance of the new method is found inferior to the solvent-based formulation, but in most cases, both methods are comparable. The experimental method could be a possible alternative to the classic one.

Summary: Lipid droplets (LDs) are known as cellular energy reserves, providing energy for various cellular activities. They are found in large numbers in eggs and early embryos from insects to mammals. Recent studies have revealed that LDs in eggs and embryos not only provide energy, but also have additional functions such as resisting lipotoxicity, oxidative stress, and bacterial infection, and providing lipid and membrane components for embryonic development. Removal of LDs from fertilized eggs or early embryos leads to developmental arrest and defects. This review summarizes recent studies on the role and mechanisms of LDs in embryonic development, as well as the genes involved in their regulation, contributing to a better understanding of embryonic development and offering new insights for the diagnosis and treatment of developmental abnormalities.

Summary: A salicylic acid ethanol solution (50% ethanol, 5%-10% salicylic acid) was reported for the preparation of Oil Red O (ORO) solution. This solution showed better staining effect on lipid staining in cells and tissues, with a clean background and short dyeing time. Additionally, it is non-toxic, easy to prepare, and can be stored for a long time, making it reliable and widely applicable in laboratories.

Summary: The purpose of this research was to improve the oxidative stability of O/W emulsions by effectively migrating tocopherols (T) to the oil-water interface layer (oxidation site) through the combination of hydrophobic T with amphiphilic phospholipids (P). The antioxidant ability of TP combinations exhibited synergistic effects in O/W emulsions, as confirmed by measuring lipid hydroperoxides and thiobarbituric acid-reactive species. The introduction of P into O/W emulsions to enhance the distribution of T at the interfacial layer was also confirmed, and the possible mechanisms of synergistic interaction between T and P were described.

Summary: ALDH1A1 plays a significant regulatory role in the differentiation of preadipocyte cells in Yan Yellow Cattle. Modulation of ALDH1A1 gene expression can affect acetaldehyde oxidation and adipocyte development, with changes in lipid accumulation and triglyceride production observed in mature adipocytes. The protein expression levels of ALDH1A1 and adipogenic factors corresponded to the mRNA levels, indicating an important role of ALDH1A1 in fat cell growth and development.

Summary: The optimization of culture conditions is crucial for improving embryo development competence in IVF. Glucose, an important carbon source, has unclear effects on the embryo development microenvironment. LC-MS analysis revealed defined metabolites at different cleavage stages, with glycometabolism playing a critical role. Adding 3 mmol/L glucose significantly improved the development competence and upregulated lipid biosynthesis gene expression at the 2-Cell stage.

Summary: Microalgae have the potential to be a valuable resource for biodiesel production, but the high energy costs associated with their cultivation, harvesting, and dewatering make algal biofuel production commercially unviable. As an alternative, microalgae biorefineries are being considered for producing bioactives to offset the costs of biofuel production. The authors suggest that producing algal bioactives through advanced manufacturing pathways, using a biorefinery approach, could be effective, profitable, and economical.

Summary: In this study, a novel alginate lyase, AlyDS44, was purified and characterized from a marine actinobacterium, Streptomyces luridiscabiei, isolated from decomposing seaweed. AlyDS44 is a bifunctional alginate lyase active on both polyguluronate and polymannuronate, with a preference for degrading polyguluronate. It has optimal activity at pH 8.5 and 45°C, and shows salt tolerance with optimal activity at 0.6 M NaCl. Metal ions Mn2+, Co2+, and Fe2+ increased its activity, while Zn2+ and Cu2+ inhibited it. The enzyme belongs to the polysaccharide lyase family 7 and mainly produces disaccharides, trisaccharides, and tetrasaccharides when degrading alginate, functioning as an endo-type alginate lyase with potential for efficient production of alginate oligosaccharides.
