Summary: In this study, the diffusion coefficient of alpha-lipoic acid (LA) in gamma-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (CD-MOF) crystals was determined using mathematical modeling and new experimental measurements. The adhesion force between LA and the dicyclodextrin cavity in the CD-MOF was identified as chemisorption dominated by hydrogen binding. It was discovered that the stability enhancement of LA in CD-MOF was due to the combined actions of the high binding free energy and steric hindrance.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of drug structure and ionization degree on the formation and properties of biocompatible layered double hydroxides (LDH) intercalated with ibuprofen and paracetamol. It was found that ibuprofen intercalation was efficient while paracetamol intercalation was poor. The dissolution kinetics of LDHs was highly pH-dependent, while the drug release kinetics were influenced by both pH and buffer type in physiological buffers.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of drug loading on the release of Levonorgestrel intrauterine systems (LNG-IUSs) by preparing drug reservoirs with different drug loading and conducting release testing under accelerated conditions. The results show that the release rate of LNG-IUSs is inversely proportional to the drug loading. Low drug loading leads to incomplete drug release or even no drug release at all. Accelerated release testing methods are found to be representative of real-time release profiles, providing confidence in extending the duration of usage for these products as long as the device remains intact and the release rate is within the therapeutic window.

Summary: A safe and biodegradable gamma-cyclodextrin-metal-organic-frameworks (gamma-CD-MOFs) was successfully synthesized and tested for curcumin encapsulation stability and release performance. Results show that gamma-CD-MOFs can be regarded as promising carriers for the delivery of curcumin or other hydrophobic nutraceuticals.

Summary: Different types of ibuprofen-loaded, poly (D,L lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)-based implants were prepared by 3D printing. The effect of filling density on drug release was investigated and it was found that filling density significantly influenced the release kinetics and the shape of the release curve. This can be explained by the presence (or absence) of a continuous aqueous phase between the polymeric filaments and the role of substantial system swelling in controlling drug release.

Summary: The entrapment procedure of a poorly water soluble drug was studied to investigate its effect on the physicochemical and drug release performances of chitosan/xanthan polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs). Different drug entrapment procedures and chitosan-to-xanthan mass ratios were observed to affect the formation of PECs, leading to controlled drug release with zero-order kinetics.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the importance of the diameter of PLGA-based implants on drug release. The results showed that increasing the implant diameter led to a decrease in drug release rates. The drug exhibited a biphasic release pattern, with a zero-order release followed by a rapid release phase. Increasing the implant diameter also delayed the onset of the rapid release phase.
