The correlation between the affective disorders and the almost ubiquitous pathological oxidative stress can be described in a multifactorial way, as an important mechanism of central nervous system impairment. Whether the obvious changes which occur in oxidative balance of the affective disorders are a part of the constitutive mechanism or a collateral effect yet remains as an interesting question. However it is now clear that oxidative stress is a component of these disorders, being characterized by different aspects in a disease-dependent manner. Still, there are a lot of controversies regarding the relevance of the oxidative stress status inmost of the affective disorders and despite the fact that most of the studies are showing that the affective disorders development can be correlated to increased oxidative levels, there are various studies stating that oxidative stress is not linked with the mood changing tendencies. Thus, in this minireview we decided to describe the way in which oxidative stress is involved in the affective disorders development, by focusing on the main oxidative stress markers that could be used mechanistically and therapeutically in these deficiencies, the genetic perspectives, some antioxidant approaches, and the relevance of some animal models studies in this context.

Death Obsession, COVID-19-Related Fear and Religiosity in People Living with Type 2 Diabetes

Violeta Enea, Octav Sorin Candel, Simona Alexandra Zancu, Alexandra Maftei, Livia Birladeanu, Daniel Timofte

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between death obsession, religiosity, and fear of COVID-19 among patients with type 2 diabetes. The results revealed a positive association between death obsession and fear of COVID-19, and individuals with higher levels of religiosity experienced greater levels of fear. The overall level of religiosity did not moderate the relationship between death obsession and fear of COVID-19, but only the preoccupation with God dimension of religiosity had a moderating effect.

Summary: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is currently being extensively researched. This study aimed to understand the effects of rotenone (ROT) on homeostasis and the potential neuroprotective role of valproic acid (VPA), antiparkinsonian agents (levodopa and carbidopa - LEV+CARB), and a mixture of lactobacillus and bifidobacterium species (PROBIO). The results showed that VPA, LEV/CARB, and PROBIO can alleviate the neurotoxicity caused by ROT and restore optimal internal parameters in zebrafish.

Reviewing the Potential Therapeutic Approaches Targeting the Modulation of Gastrointestinal Microflora in Schizophrenia

Ilinca-Bianca Nita, Ovidiu-Dumitru Ilie, Alin Ciobica, Luminita-Diana Hritcu, Irina Dobrin, Bogdan Doroftei, Romeo Dobrin

Summary: Schizophrenia is a severe brain disorder with potential involvement of gut microflora. Recent research suggests that specific lactic acid bacteria strains, combined with vitamin D and selenium, can maintain the integrity of gut flora and prevent adverse effects. However, antipsychotic medications may have negative effects on gut flora, highlighting the need for further investigation. Additionally, studying the impact of different controlled substances on microbial communities is of interest.

Atrial Fibrillation and Chronic Coronary Ischemia: A Challenging Vicious Circle

Alexandru Florinel Oancea, Raul Alexandru Jigoranu, Paula Cristina Morariu, Radu-Stefan Miftode, Bogdan Andrei Trandabat, Diana Elena Iov, Elena Cojocaru, Irina Iuliana Costache, Livia Genoveva Baroi, Daniel Vasile Timofte, Daniela Maria Tanase, Mariana Floria

Summary: Atrial fibrillation and chronic coronary syndrome have a strong dual relationship, with atrial fibrillation potentially accelerating atherosclerosis and increasing myocardial oxygen consumption, leading to a mismatch between supply and demand and promoting the development or worsening of coronary ischemia. Chronic coronary syndrome alters the structure and function of gap junction proteins, impacting action potential conduction and sustaining focal ectopic activity in atrial myocardium. They share common risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia. Breaking this vicious cycle through controlling risk factors, drug therapies (including antithrombotic therapy), and interventional therapies (revascularization and catheter ablation) is vital for patient prognosis.
