Summary: This study investigated the influence of different surfactants on the transport of carbon dots (CDs) in water-saturated soil. The results showed that both anionic and cationic surfactants facilitated the transport of CDs in the presence of Na+ background electrolyte, while the anionic surfactant suppressed CDs' mobility in the presence of divalent cation background electrolytes. The observations also revealed that the effects of surfactants were pH-dependent and related to the soil properties.

Summary: Modified magnetite chitosan with silver nanoparticles was synthesized and tested for the removal of cationic and anionic dyes in aqueous solutions. The optimal pH for removing anionic dyes was found to be 4.0, while pH 8.0 was optimal for removing cationic dyes. The synthesized nanosorbents showed high adsorption capacity and regeneration capability for both dyes.

Summary: Adsorption technology is a promising method for removing pollutants in fluids, and Ti-MOFs are widely used as efficient adsorbents. However, the use of Ti-MOFs with different morphologies for dye removal has not been reported. In this study, three kinds of Ti-MOFs with different morphologies were prepared and tested for adsorbing different dyes. It was found that the truncated octahedron Ti-MOFs showed the best removal efficiency for the cationic dye methylene blue. The adsorption process was exothermic and followed a pseudo-second-order/Freundlich isotherm model. The results also showed that the adsorption performance was dependent on the facet orientation, with truncated octahedron Ti-MOFs exhibiting the highest adsorption capacity among the three morphologies. This research provides a highly efficient adsorbent for industrial dye wastewater remediation.

Summary: A whole-cell catalysis method using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a biocatalyst was developed to convert low-value fatty acids to high-value ones. Palmitic acid was found to be the most suitable substrate, increasing the production of palmitoleic acid (POA) by 17.0% compared to de novo synthesis. Under optimal conditions, substrate utilization rate reached 96.1%, resulting in a 90.3% increase in POA production compared to fermentation only. Stable isotope analysis revealed that up to 61.7% of the substrate was catalyzed to POA. Transcriptomic analysis showed a repression of glucose to lipid but an acceleration from lipidic substrate to POA in S. cerevisiae during whole-cell catalysis.

Summary: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome leads to tissue hypoxia and metabolic impairments. In hypoxic conditions, the reverse tricarboxylic acid cycle is activated to produce lipids through reductive glutamine metabolism. This study shows that hypoxia alters cell metabolism, leading to changes in lipid composition and activation of the reverse tricarboxylic acid cycle.

Summary: This study reveals that hybrid lipids can preferentially mix into unsaturated lipids, reducing Gibbs free energy, while the mixing is unfavorable in saturated lipids. The presence of hybrid lipids in unsaturated lipids leads to an increase in area fraction and enhanced correlation length in multi-layered samples. However, there is only a weak effect on the domain structure of saturated lipids due to the presence of hybrid lipids at the phase boundary.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of dietary unsaturated and saturated fat ratio (U:S) and the ratio of linoleic and linolenic acid (LA:ALA) on the growth performance of grow-finish pigs and estrus detection of gilts. The results showed that the ratio of unsaturated fat in the diet significantly affected the growth performance of gilts, while the ratio of linoleic and linolenic acid had no significant effect on estrus detection in gilts.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant focus on the use of liquid foams in hydraulic fracturing due to their benefits, such as minimal damage to the formation. While the combination of anionic surfactants and nanoparticles has been extensively studied, research on the synergy between cationic surfactants and nanoparticles is limited. This study compares the effects of cationic/anionic surfactant and silica nanoparticles on the stability, rheology, and proppant-carrying capacity of fracturing foams at ambient and elevated temperatures. The results show that foams stabilized by cationic surfactant and silica nanoparticles have better properties compared to those stabilized by anionic surfactant and nanoparticles. This research contributes to the development of effective foam systems for high-temperature fracturing applications.

Summary: Through quantifying pressure-flow waveforms during normothermic EVLP, this study confirmed that negative pressure ventilation (NPV) may have a better effect in reducing VILI compared to positive pressure ventilation (PPV). The improved lung function during NPV EVLP may be attributed to favorable airflow patterns and/or pressure dynamics, which better mimic human respiratory patterns.

Summary: The study demonstrates that activation of mTORC1 during mechanical ventilation exacerbates lung injury, and inhibition of this pathway may mitigate ventilator-induced lung injury during ARDS. By inhibiting mTORC1, it is possible to alleviate lung damage caused by mechanical ventilation.
