Chia seeds (Salviae hispanicae semen), obtaining from Salvia hispanica L. (Lamiaceae), currently are becoming more popular in the food industry as a novel food, as ingredient of functional food (FOSHU) and dietary supplements. Chia seeds have been approved by the European Food Safety Authority and National Nutrient Database. Furthermore, thanks to medicinal properties are an object of interest of cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. In particular, chia seeds have high content of essential unsaturated fatty acids and dietary fiber, as well as essential amino acids, polyphenols, vitamins, and mineral salts. Currently, scientists are using various strategies that lead to increase in bioactive content, in chia seeds and sprouts. Recent studies confirmed that chia seeds show cardioprotective, hypotensive, antidiabetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypolipemic, neuroprotective, and hepatoprotective properties. This paper presents information obtained from scientific research on chia seeds and moreover, on S. hispanica plant and sprouts; their source, chemical composition, and health-promoting properties.

Podophyllotoxin and its derivatives: Potential anticancer agents of natural origin in cancer chemotherapy

Sara Motyka, Karolina Jafernik, Halina Ekiert, Javad Sharifi-Rad, Daniela Calina, Basem Al-Omari, Agnieszka Szopa, William C. Cho

Summary: The use of plant secondary metabolites, particularly aryltetralin lignan-podophyllotoxin (PTOX), in preventing and treating cancer has gained significant attention. PTOX exhibits potent cytotoxic activity but cannot be used in its pure form due to toxicity and side effects. Efforts are focused on synthesizing PTOX analogs with enhanced therapeutic properties. PTOX derivatives are currently used as anticancer drugs with additional effects such as immunosuppression, antiviral activity, antioxidation, hypolipemia, and anti-inflammation. In vitro cultures of Podophyllum peltatum are highlighted as a valuable source of lignans, including PTOX. Preclinical pharmacological studies confirm the anticancer potential of PTOX and its derivatives, but clinical studies are needed for further validation.

UV-C Seed Surface Sterilization and Fe, Zn, Mg, Cr Biofortification of Wheat Sprouts as an Effective Strategy of Bioelement Supplementation

Katarzyna Czarnek, Malgorzata Tatarczak-Michalewska, Piotr Dreher, Vishnu D. Rajput, Grzegorz Wojcik, Anna Gierut-Kot, Agnieszka Szopa, Eliza Blicharska

Summary: Metalloenzymes are important for regulating biological functions, and biofortification of plant materials is an effective way to prevent mineral deficiencies in human diets. This study combined biofortification of wheat sprouts with UV-C radiation treatment for seed surface sterilization and found that UV-C radiation effectively suppressed seed germination contamination by microorganisms. The sterilization process did not affect the growth and development of sprouts or nutrient bioassimilation. The results showed that wheat sprouts easily accumulate Fe, Zn, Mg, and Cr during growth, with the optimal concentrations for biofortification being 100 μg g(-1) for Fe and Zn, while the best-developed sprouts were grown in 50 μg g(-1) of Cr solution.

Comparative Analysis of Metabolic Variations, Antioxidant Profiles and Antimicrobial Activity of Salvia hispanica (Chia) Seed, Sprout, Leaf, Flower, Root and Herb Extracts

Sara Motyka, Barbara Kusznierewicz, Halina Ekiert, Izabela Korona-Glowniak, Agnieszka Szopa

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the phytochemical profiles of different plant raw materials obtained from Salvia hispanica, and to demonstrate their significant contribution to antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The study used HPLC-DAD and LC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS techniques to analyze the compounds present in the plant materials. The results showed that the extracts from the leaves exhibited the strongest antibacterial and antifungal activity. This study provides valuable knowledge on the biologically active metabolites present in different parts of Salvia hispanica and their potential applications.

Chemotherapeutic properties and side-effects associated with the clinical practice of terpene alkaloids: paclitaxel, docetaxel, and cabazitaxel

Mario Sousa-Pimenta, Leticia M. Estevinho, Agnieszka Szopa, Mahnoor Basit, Khushbukhat Khan, Muhammad Armaghan, Manshuk Ibrayeva, Eda Sonmez Gurer, Daniela Calina, Christophe Hano, Javad Sharifi-Rad

Summary: Many biological and synthetic agents have been explored to stop the spread of cancer and cure it. Paclitaxel is an effective anticancer drug derived from the tree Taxus brevifolia, and its derivatives have been established as therapeutic compounds against neoplastic disorders. This review explores the mechanisms of action of paclitaxel and its derivatives, different formulations available, as well as the role of paclitaxel in hematological malignancies and potential limitations in its clinical use. The impact of paclitaxel on other oncogenic pathways and its immunomodulatory potential are also analyzed, providing insights for future chemotherapeutic approaches to cancer.

Ewelina Sobstyl, Agnieszka Szopa, Malgorzata Olszowy-Tomczyk, Sebastian Gnat, Karolina Jafernik, Irena Maria Choma

Summary: HPLC and TLC profiling were conducted on leaf and fruit extracts of five species from the Schisandraceae family. Lignans and phenolic compounds were found in both fruits and leaves of all species. The highest abundance of lignans was detected in the fruit extract of Schisandra chinensis, with 15 compounds identified. The fruit extracts of S. chinensis and S. rubriflora exhibited exceptional antibacterial activity, while all fruit and leaf extracts showed enzyme-inhibiting abilities, except for the fruit extract of Kadsura japonica. Antioxidant activity was stronger in the leaf extracts compared to the fruit extracts, assessed using TLC-direct bioautography and spectrophotometric measurements.
