Summary: This study focused on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles and their antibacterial activity. The use of nitric acid to adjust the pH during synthesis produced larger and more varied particle sizes. The silver nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto clay minerals and exhibited strong antibacterial effects. Additionally, the cytotoxicity of the silver-loaded samples was found to be low.

Summary: Extrusion and hot compressing molding processes were used to fabricate BioPE composites reinforced with argan byproducts as bio-fillers. The mechanical properties of the composites were investigated by dynamical mechanical analysis and rheological testing. The results showed that the addition of argan byproducts improved the mechanical properties of the composites. Furthermore, the thermal analysis revealed that the bio-fillers reduced the decomposition temperatures of the polymer. This study offers an environmentally friendly alternative for utilizing underutilized biomass and has the potential to create new markets for argan byproducts.

Summary: Food-borne fungi pose significant hazards to food preservation and human health, calling for packaging films with antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. In this study, silver nanoparticles were synthesized from grape seed extracts and coated with chitosan. The results showed that grapes treated with chitosan-coated silver nanoparticles exhibited reduced decay percentage and weight loss, maintained high titratable acidity, and inhibited mold growth during storage.

Summary: The antimicrobial effect of microencapsulated Hibiscus sabdariffa extract using modified corn starch and pectin as wall materials was evaluated in this study. Optimal drying conditions were established for achieving high encapsulation efficiency and antimicrobial activity, with the microencapsulated extract showing improved inhibition halos against Salmonella typhimurium and Staphyloccocus aureus compared to the extract alone. The synergistic reorganizations of molecular formations in the microcapsules led to enhanced diffusion of antimicrobial compounds, suggesting the microencapsulated extract as a natural alternative for food preservation.

Summary: This study focuses on synthesizing and characterizing hydrogel and cryogel microspheres doped with green synthesized silver nanoparticles (CS-AgNPs). The antimicrobial activity of these microspheres is compared with commercial antibiotics. SEM and EDX techniques confirm the porous structure of CS and the dispersion of AgNPs, respectively. The results show that CS-AgNPs microspheres exhibit superior antimicrobial activity to antibiotics against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. CS-AgNPs microspheres are promising as antimicrobial and biocompatible agents for medical applications.

Summary: This study found that Mg2+ reduced the antimicrobial activity of Ag+ in bacteria, while Zn2+ increased it. Mg2+ inhibited cellular uptake of Ag+ and promoted the formation of metallic Ag nanoparticles, leading to reduced antibacterial activity. On the other hand, Zn2+ had a synergistic effect with Ag+ and increased bacterial death.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical properties, melts rheology, morphology, and disintegration ability of blends based on Mater-Bi-(R) and poly-L-(lactic acid) (PLLA) with the addition of Joncryl ADR((R)). It was found that adding PLLA and Joncryl ADR((R)) significantly improved the tensile strength, stiffness, and elongation at break of the blend. The inclusion of PLLA also preserved the biodegradation disintegration of the blend.

Summary: This study proposes a facile method for preparing silver nanoparticles using tea extract and evaluates its antimicrobial activity. The synthesized silver nanoparticles show good antibacterial effects on Escherichia coli and Pseudopestalotiopsis theae, broadening the application of nano silver in antimicrobial agents. The reactions between silver nanoparticles and bacteria/fungi may not be driven by electrostatic interactions, but rather by intermolecular forces.

Summary: Titanium nanotubes (TNTs) decorated with CuO and Cu2O showed enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light, with TNT-Cu2O exhibiting higher activity. Bananas packaged with TNT-Cu2O maintained firmness, reduced weight loss, and delayed browning, preserving freshness for up to 7 days. TNT-Cu2O could be a promising ethylene scavenging material for extending the shelf life of fruits and vegetables.

Summary: The storage stability of pepper powder packaged with two different film pouches (Ny/PE and PET/Al/PE) inserted with moisture absorbent and oxygen scavenger was studied. The moisture content of the powder decreased significantly in Ny/PE packaging after exposure to storage temperature abuse, while it remained stable in PET/Al/PE packaging. The quality characteristics of the powder, including microbial cell count, capsaicinoids, ascorbic acid, and free sugar content, were maintained with no noticeable changes during storage. Pepper powder with a moisture content of 13-14% and packaged with a film with high gas-barrier properties can be stored for more than 5 months, even if there is unexpected temperature abuse during storage.
