The study delves into the conceptual components required for the design and analysis of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply chains, underscoring the potential impact of monetizing environmental and social services on the overall viability of SAF production. Comparisons are made between the current state of SAF supply chain configuration and other supply chain strategies, with a focus on potential strategies to enhance the existing approach and improve the SAF business model.
The efficient configuration of supply chains is a current challenge for deploying sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a key element of the decarbonization of the aviation industry. Despite advances in the modeling of biorefinery location siting, transportation network design, and co-products use, current supply chains and business models for renewable fuel production do not result in costs that are competitive with fossil fuels. Various elements for process efficiency enhancement, risk mitigation, total cost reduction, and profit maximization have been studied in supply chain design. In this work, we study the conceptual components needed for the design and analysis of supply chains. We emphasize the impact that monetization of environmental and social services could have on the overall viability of SAF production. The current state of the supply chain configuration of SAF is compared with other supply chain and value-chain strategies, mainly: (1) lean, used for staple commodities, (2) agile, intended for innovative products and services, (3) green, meant to reduce the environmental impacts, and (4) risk-adverse, used to minimize supply risk disruptions. A summary of models and simulation approaches used to synthesize and solve supply chain problems is included. Our review highlights the uniqueness of the supply chain for SAF and proposes ways to enrich the existing approach with methods used by other industries. The SAF business model could be improved by including ecosystem and social services to generate additional revenue. New strategies accounting for the dynamic interactions between the components of the supply chain of SAF, including services, are needed.

Strategic assessment of sustainable aviation fuel production technologies: Yield improvement and cost reduction opportunities

Abid H. Tanzil, Kristin Brandt, Michael Wolcott, Xiao Zhang, Manuel Garcia-Perez

Summary: The aviation industry has been studying strategies for producing sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) for over a decade, with a focus on detailed techno-economic analyses (TEA) of six SAF production technologies. Triglyceride-based Hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) emerged as the most economically competitive option, while lignocellulose-based technologies showed lower fuel yields and higher costs due to the high oxygen content of initial feedstock. Efforts are needed to improve SAF yields from lignocellulosic materials in order to achieve cost targets. Proposed integrated biomass/natural gas hybridized concepts could potentially result in more cost-effective SAF production.

Acidic Ethanol/Water Casting Approach to Improve Chitin Nanofibril Dispersion and Properties of Propionylated Chitin Biocomposites

Tuhua Zhong, Michael P. Wolcott, Hang Liu, Jinwu Wang

Summary: The research developed a fabrication process using acidic ethanol/water as a medium to achieve homogeneous dispersion of chitin nanofibrils (ChNFs) in a chitin propionate (CP) solution, forming ChNF-reinforced CP nanocomposites. The use of acidified ethanol/water mixture resulted in clear and stable formulations with transparent properties and moderate UV-blocking capability. The ChNF-reinforced CP nanocomposites showed improved tensile strength, modulus, and maximum degradation temperature, indicating substantial reinforcing effects of ChNFs.

Probabilistic Wildfire risk assessment methodology and evaluation of a supply chain network

Fangjiao Ma, Ji Yun Lee, Dane Camenzind, Michael Wolcott

Summary: This paper presents a probabilistic framework for quantitatively assessing the impact of wildfire risk on supply chain networks. The research demonstrates that while wildfire damages to supply nodes are insignificant, total supply chain costs still increase considerably due to high unmet demand penalty and detours. Additionally, the study highlights the vulnerability of network configuration under wildfire risk.

Summary: As the global population grows, the demand for food, energy, and water will increase significantly. However, limited land availability and competition for solar resources pose challenges to resource generation technologies. In the United States, both agriculture and solar energy production have adopted densification schemes to improve yields and energy output per unit of land. This research proposes an Agrivoltaic food and energy coproduction architecture that optimizes power generation while maintaining crop productivity by implementing ideal anti-tracking during critical growth periods. This technology offers a viable pathway for widespread solar implementation throughout the contiguous United States.
