Results showed that pCA with CO2 could effectively maintain the sensory and texture qualities of watercored apples. Treated with pulsed controlled CO2, the degree of membrane lipid peroxidation of the apples was effectively reduced and the membrane system was well maintained. Under the condition of pCA with 5% CO2, the endurance of watercored apples was less than 45 days and the internal browning was serious.
Watercored 'Fuji' apple with special water core and unique flavor is a characteristic fruit. However, the problems of water core disappearance and browning in the apples are outstanding during postharvest storage. In this study, pulsed controlled atmosphere (pCA) with CO2 was used to protect the water-core and resist browning of apples. Effects of different concentrations of CO2 on the quality of apple fruits was investigated, and CO2 injury characteristic to apple fruits were studied as well. Results showed that pCA with CO2 could effectively maintain the sensory and texture qualities of watercored apples. Treated with pulsed controlled CO2, the degree of membrane lipid peroxidation of the apples was effectively reduced and the membrane system was well maintained. Meanwhile, the activity of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) of the apples were inhibited and the browning was reduced. On the whole, pCA with 1% CO2 presented the most significant effects on the quality preservation of watercored apples while higher CO2 showed negative effects on the quality of the samples. Under the condition of pCA with 5% CO2, the endurance of watercored apples was less than 45 days and the internal browning was serious. In conclusion, 2% similar to 3% O-2 and pCA with 1% CO2 was the best and most effective in the long-term preservation of watercored apples, and it is beneficial to guide for the preservation of apple fruits.

Autoimmunity in Anti-Glomerular Basement Membrane Disease: A Review of Mechanisms and Prospects for Immunotherapy

Huang Kuang, Jing Liu, Xiao-yu Jia, Zhao Cui, Ming-hui Zhao

Summary: Anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) disease is an organ-specific autoimmune disorder characterized by autoantibodies against the glomerular and alveolar basement membranes. Epitope mapping studies have identified several nephritogenic epitopes and critical residues that trigger the disease. Epitope spreading and mimicry have also been implicated in the pathogenesis. Understanding these autoimmune responses may lead to new therapeutic approaches for anti-GBM disease.

Dual functions of activated carbon air-cathode: Nitrobenzene removal and electricity production in microbial fuel cells

Zhifang Zuo, Ting Huang, Xiaoting Zhu, Xiaoyu Jia, Enren Zhang

Summary: This study shows that single-chamber microbial fuel cells (S-MFCs) assembled with a bioanode and an activated carbon (AC) air cathode can simultaneously remove nitrobenzene (NB) and generate electricity. The S-MFCs with 1 mM NB exhibit long-term NB tolerance and stable electricity production, with a maximum power of 16.2 ± 1.3 W m(-3) and NB removal up to 98% in an operation cycle. The adsorption at the AC air cathode is the main pathway for the removal of NB and its reduction product aniline (AN) from solution in S-MFCs.

METTL3-mediated N6-methyladenosine modification and HDAC5/YY1 promote IFFO1 downregulation in tumor development and chemo-resistance

Ye Zhang, Jian-Ge Qiu, Xiao-Yu Jia, Yu Ke, Ming-Kun Zhang, David Stieg, Wen-Jing Liu, Ling-Zhi Liu, Lin Wang, Bing-Hua Jiang

Summary: In this study, we found that IFFO1 is a novel tumor suppressor that plays an important role in tumor development, metastasis, and chemoresistance in ovarian cancer. Overexpression of IFFO1 can inhibit the translocation of β-catenin to the nucleus, thereby reducing tumor metastasis and drug resistance. The study also found that the expression of IFFO1 is regulated by histone deacetylase and RNA methylation, and the IFFO1 signaling pathway may be a potential therapeutic target for cancer.

Summary: This paper designs a magnetization drive coil based on a Helmholtz coil, and analyzes the influence of different factors on the magnetic induction intensity to obtain the optimized structure of the coil. The central magnetic induction intensity and magnetic induction line distribution of the magnetization drive coil and Helmholtz coil are compared, and the results show that the optimized magnetization drive coil has a higher central magnetic induction intensity and a more uniform and dense magnetic induction line distribution. This design approach provides a reference for the structural design and operating characteristics analysis of magnetized drive coils, shortening the design cost and development cycle.

Antagonistic and synergistic interactions dominate GHGs fluxes, soil properties and yield responses to biochar and N addition

Xiaoyu Jia, Weiming Yan, Hongze Ma, Zhouping Shangguan

Summary: Applying biochar and nitrogen (N) together to soil can enhance soil CO2 emissions, yield, soil organic carbon (SOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and total nitrogen (TN). Biochar addition can reduce N2O emissions, global warming potential (GWP), greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI), NH4 (+), and NO3 (-), while N addition has the opposite effect. Effects of paper pouches of different light transmittance on the phenolic synthesis and related gene expression in peach fruit

Ziwen Su, Juan Yan, Binbin Zhang, Meng Sun, Zhixiang Cai, Zhijun Shen, Ruijuan Ma, Mingliang Yu

Summary: Bagging is a crucial cultivation measure that affects the quality of peach fruit by regulating exposure to light. This study investigated the effects of bagging on the content of phenolic compounds in peach fruit and identified the most sensitive compounds to bagging treatment. The study also explored the regulatory role of bagging on phenolic synthetic-related genes. The results showed that bagging affected the accumulation of different phenolics in different peach cultivars and light intensity played a significant role in the accumulation of anthocyanins and other phenolic substances in peach fruit. Additionally, the expression of structural genes and transcription factors related to phenolic synthesis was regulated by bagging and light conditions. These findings provide a foundation for understanding the regulation mechanism of light on the synthesis of phenolic compounds in peach fruit.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of water stress on cocoa trees and found that they are highly sensitive to water stress, with different genotypes exhibiting varied responses. Potassium application did not mitigate the negative effects of water stress. There was significant variation among genotypes in terms of leaf and crown traits, and positive interactions between genotype and irrigation were observed. These findings provide insights into the acclimation strategies of cocoa trees and can be useful for selecting drought-tolerant genotypes.
