Summary: This study investigated the effects of fish gelatin/chitosan-based films incorporated with lemon essential oil on grass carp fillets during chilled and iced storage. The results showed that the active films inhibited moisture transformation and improved the water-holding capacity of the fish samples. Additionally, the films effectively reduced the growth of bacteria and preserved the freshness of the samples. The combination of the active films and iced storage provided a promising strategy to prolong the shelf-life of grass carp fillets.

Summary: In this study, the impact of incorporating lemon peel extract-loaded nanogels into casein/basil seed gum films was investigated. The results showed that the nanogels improved the mechanical properties, thermal stability, hydrophobicity, water vapor permeability, and water solubility of the films, and also changed their color. The nanogel-containing films exhibited good antioxidant properties and had inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Furthermore, the films showed no toxicity towards endothelial cells. Therefore, casein-basil seed gum films loaded with lemon peel extract nanogels have great potential for food packaging.

Summary: In this study, lemon essential oil microcapsules were prepared using the ionic gelation method with chitosan and cellulose nanocrystals as wall materials. The optimal process conditions to achieve the maximum encapsulation efficiency of 89.98% were determined by adjusting the concentrations of chitosan and cellulose nanocrystals and the pH of the solution. The characteristics of the microcapsules were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of green tea extract and lemon nanoemulsion on mechanical, thermal and permeability properties of gelatin matrix. Results showed that green tea increased the tensile strength of gelatin while the nanoemulsion decreased it, also enhancing the water vapor permeability of gelatin film. Changes in FTIR spectra of gelatin film were observed when the green tea and nanoemulsion were incorporated, suggesting a potential for edible film application.

Summary: Chitosan-tea tree essential oil (TTEO) films were evaluated for their microstructure, thermal properties, mechanical properties, water vapor permeability, antioxidant activity, and optical properties. The films dissolved completely in water, with those made in malic acid showing higher elongation to break and antioxidant activity. TTEO addition slightly improved the UV-barrier properties of the films, indicating their great potential for food packaging applications.

Summary: Generally, active packaging with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties can improve the quality of ordinary packaging and extend the shelf life of food. In this study, an active edible film was prepared by incorporating anise essential oil (AEO) into a gelatin-gelatin-alginate film. The results showed that the antioxidant capacity of the film increased with the increase in AEO concentration, while the film's tensile strength and moisture content decreased. The films exhibited good antimicrobial activity and were suitable for food storage.

Summary: Recently, the packaging industry has a pressing need for environmentally friendly, renewable, sustainable, cost-effective, and biological resources due to declining petroleum resources worldwide, increasing demand of developing economies for petroleum, and political and environmental concerns about fossil-based resources. This study synthesized and characterized collagen hydrolysate (CH), chitosan (CS), and keratin (K) ternary films with different blend compositions. The results demonstrated that hide trimming and chicken feather waste could be used to produce a biodegradable film, contributing to recycling and sustainable development in the leather and poultry industry.
