Strawberries and blueberries are two of the most commonly consumed berries. Berries, in general, are characterized by their highly nutritive compounds, including minerals, vitamins, fatty acids, and dietary fiber, as well as their high content and wide diversity of bioactive compounds, such as phenolic compounds and organic acids. These bioactive compounds have been associated with protective effects against chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, Alzheimer's and other disorders. In this paper 16 human intervention studies investigating the beneficial health effects of dietary strawberry or blueberry consumption on inflammation, cardiovascular disease or cognitive function and mental health are reviewed.

Effects of glycerol and sorbitol on optical, mechanical, and gas barrier properties of potato peel-based films

Katharina Miller, Cornelia Silcher, Martina Lindner, Markus Schmid

Summary: Potato peel is a potential material for film development, and films containing sorbitol as a plasticizer show differences in their physicochemical properties compared to films containing glycerol, with better breathability performance.

Food packaging and sustainability - Consumer perception vs. correlated scientific facts: A review

Sarah Otto, Mara Strenger, Andrea Maier-Noeth, Markus Schmid

Summary: Food packaging plays a crucial role in maintaining food safety and quality throughout the supply chain. However, consumers often have misconceptions about the environmental impact of packaging materials, leading to discrepancies between scientific assessments and consumer perceptions. Consumers tend to make purchasing decisions based on emotional factors rather than cognitive reasoning, which may result in less environmentally sustainable behavior. Awareness training, clear labeling schemes, and nudging for sustainable behavior could potentially help align consumer behavior with scientific facts and promote more sustainable purchasing habits.

Summary: This review provides an overview of different indication systems for detecting biogenic amine formation during spoilage of meat and meat products. It points out the potential for these indication systems to be used as spoilage indicators, but emphasizes the need for further research to overcome commercial application limitations.

Effect of glycerol and sorbitol on the mechanical and barrier properties of films based on pea protein isolate produced by high-moisture extrusion processing

Sophia Faust, Julian Foerster, Martina Lindner, Markus Schmid

Summary: The study investigated the effect of two plasticizers on films composed of pea protein isolate, revealing that flexibility and workability improved with higher plasticizer concentrations, but so did the water vapor transmission rate and oxygen transmission rate. Glycerol films retained more moisture compared to sorbitol films, and sorbitol was found to be more polar than the pea protein isolate.

Physical, Chemical and Biochemical Modification Approaches of Potato (Peel) Constituents for Bio-Based Food Packaging Concepts: A Review

Katharina Miller, Corina L. Reichert, Markus Schmid, Myriam Loeffler

Summary: This article extensively reviews the scientific literature on the physical, chemical, and biochemical modification of potato constituents, with a focus on potato starch and potato protein. The effects of different modification techniques on the potato constituents are qualitatively interpreted to provide a condensed overview. This is significant for the potential further valorization of potato components in areas such as bio-based food packaging.
