High biological value compounds are very important in the food and pharmaceutical sectors. The leading research interests are seeking efficient methods for extracting these substances. The objective of this study was to evaluate different extraction methods to obtain mangiferin and lupeol at preparative scale from leaves and bark of mango tree varieties Ataulfo and Autochthonous from Nayarit, Mexico. Four extraction techniques were evaluated such as maceration, Soxhlet, sonication (UAE) and microwave (MAE). Sonication gave the highest concentration of mangiferin and lupeol, demonstrating that extraction assisted by ultrasound could be an effective alternative to conventional extraction techniques because it is a low cost, simple and reliable process. Finally, mangiferin and lupeol were obtained at preparative scale with a higher concentration of bioactive compounds, 1.45 g 100 g(-1) y 0.92 mg 100 g(-1) sample on (d.b.), respectively. The barks from Ataulfo and Autochthonous mango trees turned out to be favourable sources for obtaining mangiferin and lupeol.

Metabolism of Ganoderma spp. native strains from the Sonoran Desert with vineyard pruning extracts by isothermal microcalorimetry

Ximena Martinez-Miranda, Rafael Lopez-Cruz, Aldo Gutierrez, Osiris Alvarez-Bajo, Martin Esqueda, Juan Arturo Ragazzo-Sanchez, Montserrat Calderon-Santoyo

Summary: This study evaluated the metabolism of Ganoderma species grown in liquid medium with different polarities of vineyard pruning extracts. The results showed that native strains had a higher metabolic yield compared to the control strain. Among them, Ganoderma curtisii showed the best response to vineyard pruning extracts, with a shorter lag phase and a significant increase in growth rate. This technique has the potential to determine the concentration and effect time of elicitors that produce liquid cultures of Ganoderma species with higher metabolic activity.

Teresa Sandoval-Contreras, Luis Garrido-Sanchez, Juan Arturo Ragazzo-Sanchez, Manuel Reinhart Kirchmayr, Jose Alberto Narvaez-Zapata, Montserrat Calderon-Santoyo

Summary: The study examined the temperature effect on the interaction between fungal isolates in papaya. Four types of interaction were observed: mutual intermingling, mutual antagonism on contact, dominance on contact, and dominance at a distance. The dominance of certain fungi varied with temperature, with F. pernambucarum being more competitive at 13 and 35 degrees Celsius, and R. stolonifer being more competitive at 25 degrees Celsius. These findings have implications for improving postharvest management of papaya fruit.

Structural Modification of Jackfruit Leaf Protein Concentrate by Enzymatic Hydrolysis and Their Effect on the Emulsifier Properties

Carolina Calderon-Chiu, Montserrat Calderon-Santoyo, Julio Cesar Barros-Castillo, Jose Alfredo Diaz, Juan Arturo Ragazzo-Sanchez

Summary: This study investigated the effects of pepsin and pancreatin hydrolysis on jackfruit leaf protein concentrate in terms of amino acid composition, structure, thermal properties, and emulsion formation. The results showed that pancreatin had higher content of essential and hydrophobic amino acids and better emulsifying properties. The beta-sheet fraction increased with hydrolysis time for pepsin, while it decreased for pancreatin. The stabilized emulsions with pancreatin hydrolysates had homogeneous distributions and smaller particle sizes.
