The interest of food industry to merchandise natural astaxanthin is growing up. However, it confronts scientific and technological challenges mainly related to its poor water solubility and chemical instability. Here, we present a new quick and efficient green process to simultaneously extract, encapsulate and stabilize astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis. The process is based on the hitherto unexplored combination of supramolecular solvents (SUPRAS), nanostructured liquids generated from amphiphiles through sequential self-assembly and coacervation, and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs). These novel nanosystems were characterized by means of dynamic light scattering, AFM and cryoSEM, revealing spherical particles of similar to 100 nm. Their antioxidant activity was measured by ORAC (20.6 +/- 3.9 mu M TE) and alpha-TEAC (2.92 +/- 0.58 mu M alpha-TE) assays and their in vitro capacity to inhibit ROS by DHE probe. Results showed that the SUPRAS-NLCs proposed yield high extraction and encapsulation efficiencies (71 +/- 4%) in combination with a remarkable time stability (180 d, 4 degrees C).

How yarn orientation limits fibrotic tissue ingrowth in a woven polyester heart valve scaffold: a case report

Anne Meddahi-Pelle, Graciela Pavon-Djavid, Nabil Chakfe, Frederic Heim

Summary: Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) has become a popular alternative to surgical valve replacement, but there is limited knowledge about the long-term durability of transcatheter implanted biological tissue. A preliminary animal case study showed that woven fabric valve leaflets made from 45-degree inclined yarns could limit the development of fibrosis.

The protective effect of N-acetylcysteine on antimycin A-induced respiratory chain deficiency in mesenchymal stem cells

Summary: Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is an effective treatment for tissue injuries, but it is limited by early cell death. This study found that oxidative stress and energy metabolism disruption are the main reasons for the early death of MSCs. Strategies such as preconditioning and antioxidant pretreatment are being developed to improve the bio-functional properties of MSCs. The use of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) was shown to alleviate DNA damage, cell apoptosis, and oxidative stress, but did not affect mitochondrial membrane potential.

Double-headed amphiphile-based sponge droplets: synthesis, characterization and potential for the extraction of compounds over a wide polarity range

S. Gonzalez-Rubio, A. Ballesteros-Gomez, D. Garcia-Gomez, S. Rubio

Summary: SUPRASs with increased hydrophilicity were synthesized to enhance the extractability of polar compounds. The aggregates formed by self-assembled double-headed amphiphile in hydro-organic media showed highly hydrophilic microenvironments, leading to increased recovery factors for perfluorinated compounds in natural waters. This work demonstrates that hydrophilicity in SUPRASs can be tailored to improve compound extractability in multi-residue analysis.

UHPLC-MS/MS-Based Identity Confirmation of Amino Acids Involved in Response to and Side Effects from Antiseizure Medications

Mo Awchi, Pablo Sinues, Alexandre N. Datta, Diego Garcia-Gomez, Kapil Dev Singh

Summary: Real-time breath analysis using secondary electro-spray ionization coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry is a fast and noninvasive method to assess a person's metabolic state. However, the inability to confidently assign mass spectral features to compounds due to the lack of chromatographic separation can be overcome by using exhaled breath condensate and conventional LC-MS systems. In this study, the presence of six amino acids (GABA, Oxo-Pro, Asp, Gln, Glu, and Tyr), which have been reported to be involved in response to antiseizure medications and their side effects, was confirmed in exhaled breath condensate and, by extension, in exhaled human breath for the first time. Raw data is publicly available at MetaboLights with the accession number MTBLS6760.

Summary: Podocytes are important kidney cells that prevent proteinuria by acting as gatekeepers of the glomerular filtration barrier. Podocytopathies are kidney diseases caused by damage to these cells, which can be caused by various genetic and environmental factors. Recent evidence suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction plays a role in podocyte damage, and further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets.

The digestion fates of lipids with different unsaturated levels in people with different age groups

Yanan Wang, Jiachen Shi, Yong-Jiang Xu, Chin-Ping Tan, Yuanfa Liu

Summary: This study investigates the variations in lipid digestion profiles among individuals of different ages using in vitro digestion models. The findings suggest that adults have a more comprehensive lipid digestion compared to infants, and infants tend to release shorter chain length and more saturated free fatty acids during digestion. Additionally, the particle sizes in the stomach of the elderly were consistently larger. This study enhances our understanding of how lipids with different degrees of unsaturation undergo digestion in diverse age groups.

Mechanism of aroma enhancement methods in accelerating Congou black tea acidification subjected to room temperature storage

Zixuan Xie, De Zhang, Junyu Zhu, Qianqian Luo, Jun Liu, Jingtao Zhou, Xiaoyong Wang, Yuqiong Chen, Zhi Yu, Dejiang Ni

Summary: This study investigated the acidification of aroma-enhanced black tea during storage. Analysis of non-volatile substances and organic acids using UPLC-Q-TOF/MS and HPLC revealed a decrease in soluble sugars and amino acids, while an increase in organic acids such as oxalic acid, malic acid, and quinic acid. In vitro experiments further demonstrated that the acidification is a result of the decomposition of sugars and amino acids by heating, as well as the oxidation of aromatic aldehydes. Additionally, the study showed that the taste composition of tea infusion is altered, with reduced amino acids, catechins, soluble sugars, and flavonoids. This research provides a theoretical basis for improving the quality of black tea.
