Summary: This study explores the elements that contribute to the notion of product quality, suggesting that besides the standards associated with quality seals, other factors such as trust and proximity between producers and consumers play a crucial role. By analyzing two localized agri-food systems in different socio-political contexts, it is found that informal instruments are important in quality categorization. The study proposes a categorization of food quality based on the conceptual framework of trust, which can guide Geographical Indications (GIs) valorisation initiatives in working with different qualities in their LAS.

Summary: This study compares the effects of Mercosur and EU on the GI market, concluding that adherence to TRIPS is necessary but not sufficient for development; adherence to the Lisbon Agreement strengthens the ability to sustain a large-scale GI market; standardization of regulatory treatment and interventionist action helps stabilize and promote institutions in the GI market.

Summary: This article discusses the importance and challenges of competitiveness and sustainability in the agri-food sector, and proposes the construction of a Sustainable Economic Competitiveness Index (SECI). Through the study of the cereal chain in selected EU countries, it is proven that building sustainable agricultural economic competitiveness requires a mix of strategic actions, particularly the calibration of trade flow patterns and policies according to national factor endowments to achieve high levels of SECI.

Summary: Geographical indication (GI) represents the specific qualities and reputation of regional characteristics of agricultural products, providing a positive approach for stabilizing agricultural product exports, achieving high quality and high prices, and promoting rural revitalization. This paper discusses the differences between China and the European Union (EU) in terms of GI protection, including institutional frameworks, operational systems, and the status of GIs. The aim of the study is to identify these differences, highlight China's shortcomings, and propose policy recommendations to enhance GI protection, exploit the economic impact of GIs, and improve China's export competitiveness.

Summary: The ten countries that joined the European Union in 2004 have experienced faster economic growth and slower declines in energy consumption. This study provides detailed emission inventories and analyzes the contributions of different factors to CO2 emission changes. The results show a decrease in total CO2 emissions, but achieving carbon neutrality requires significant changes in energy sources and technology.

Summary: The EU's demand for GIs in EU-Australia trade negotiations is based on protecting well-established authentic EU GI products, rather than being driven by current non-GI uses of GI names. Few product names would be banned if EU demands are granted by Australia, implying that Australian negotiators and producers should be less afraid of losing currently established generic food names.

Summary: This study finds that foreign investments globally face lower physical climate risks compared to local companies, but the differences in risks between foreign and local facilities within countries are small. Chinese outward foreign direct investment is significantly more exposed to various physical climate risks across countries compared to other foreign facilities, however, within host countries, the risks of Chinese overseas facilities are comparable to those of non-Chinese foreign investments.

Summary: This study examines the trade-environment link in African trade patterns and finds that dirty trade is increasingly concentrated in African countries, particularly those with less stringent environmental regulations. Furthermore, exports from dirty industries tend to concentrate in countries with higher levels of capital endowments. These findings have important implications for trade and environmental policies as well as sustainable development in Africa.

Summary: One of the main objectives of EU trade policy is to establish wider protection for its regional specialty foods, known as Geographical Indications (GIs). This article develops and tests a theory of GI protection using new data on GIs listed for protection in 11 recent EU trade agreements. It finds that EU trade agreements are more likely to protect GIs with higher sales values and from countries in the South of Europe, where GIs are highly salient because of gastronationalism.

Summary: This study developed a robust and accurate method for authenticating the geographical origin of GI products, achieving 100% prediction accuracy for six varieties of Chinese GI rice using ICP-MS elemental profiling and machine learning algorithms with only four elements. The methodology can be used for tracing geographical origins and controlling fraudulent labeling of agri-food products.

Summary: The implementation of the rural revitalization strategy proposed by the Nineteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China is crucial for achieving common prosperity by increasing farmers' income and narrowing the urban-rural income gap. This study investigates the effect and realization mechanism of geographical indication (GI) on reducing the urban-rural income gap, using statistical data from 31 provinces in China. The results show that GI branding has the potential to reduce the urban-rural income gap, with each additional unit of GI reducing the income difference by 0.160 units in the region and 0.133 units in neighboring regions. The brand effect of GI also promotes agricultural product exports, which play a significant mediating role in narrowing the urban-rural income gap. The government should focus on managing and protecting GI, as well as actively marketing GI products and promoting international mutual recognition and protection of GI.

Summary: This study examines the interrelationship between trade environment and oil rents and their impact on financial development. The results show that FDI and ease of doing business increase oil rents, but trade openness in oil producing countries does not reduce the resource curse. Moreover, oil rents have a negative effect on financial development, and there is a substitutability effect between oil rents and trade environment.

Summary: When Poland joined the EU, its national competences in external trade policy were transferred to EU institutions, which restricted its ability to change duties on goods imported from outside the EU and conclude trade agreements with third countries. Although Poland's trade with the EU has increased, its trade with the rest of the world has not substantially changed. The article aims to identify changes in Poland's extra-EU imports and exports since joining the EU, analyzing trade value and concentration indices. Comparisons with other V4 countries reveal trends of greater similarity to the EU average and increased diversification in trade partners from outside the EU.

Summary: The article highlights the long-standing structural problem in global food security where economic access to food has not been adequately addressed. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated food insecurity, with low household income identified as the main factor behind the increase in malnourishment. To address this issue, there is a need for a stronger emphasis on poverty reduction and raising the wages of low-income households.

Summary: Through comparing certified food and non-certified food in terms of economic, social, and environmental performance, it was found that certified food outperforms non-certified food in most indicators, especially in economic and social aspects. However, their performance is similar in major environmental indicators. Despite the higher cost of certified food, the extra performance per euro is similar to traditional policy interventions for improving diet sustainability.

Summary: This study sheds new light on the "attitude-behaviour gap" among European consumers in relation to Food Quality Schemes (FQS). Through ethnographic fieldwork data from 41 households in seven European countries, the study reveals that consumers exhibit different levels of engagement with FQS in their everyday food practices. The co-existence of multiple regimes of engagement highlights a dynamic and evolving process of adjustment in how consumers understand and interact with FQS.

Summary: Short food supply chains, including farmers' markets, are gaining attention in international studies. This research focuses on the relationship between Hungarian university students and farmers' markets. The survey results show that price, convenience, selection, and quality are the main considerations for university students when purchasing food. The distance from farmers' markets is the main obstacle for non-regular buyers, and organizing farmers' markets on university campuses could be a solution.

Summary: Shortening food supply chains has gained increasing support from policymakers due to its potential to improve returns to farmers and stimulate rural development. This article quantifies the impacts of short food supply chains on local economies using the LM3 method and a dataset of 122 farm businesses from five European Union countries. The results show that short food supply chains have similar multiplier effects as long food supply chain equivalents, highlighting the potential for local economic development.
