Summary: The EU's demand for GIs in EU-Australia trade negotiations is based on protecting well-established authentic EU GI products, rather than being driven by current non-GI uses of GI names. Few product names would be banned if EU demands are granted by Australia, implying that Australian negotiators and producers should be less afraid of losing currently established generic food names.

Summary: One of the main objectives of EU trade policy is to establish wider protection for its regional specialty foods, known as Geographical Indications (GIs). This article develops and tests a theory of GI protection using new data on GIs listed for protection in 11 recent EU trade agreements. It finds that EU trade agreements are more likely to protect GIs with higher sales values and from countries in the South of Europe, where GIs are highly salient because of gastronationalism.

Summary: This article examines the impact of RTAs on protection for agricultural producers in excluded countries, finding that an increase in preferential import share from trading partners decreases the NRA in excluded countries, with a more significant effect on net-importing countries. Developed countries tend to reduce protection for more protected producers, while developing countries tend to reduce protection for less protected producers.

Summary: The boundaries of geographical indication (GI) areas are crucial for establishing collective regional brands. Smaller areas tend to result in higher prices due to quantity restrictions and perceived higher quality. Empirical evidence from regression analysis on 22 hams confirms that larger GI areas are associated with lower prices and that the impact on prices is influenced by both quantity and quality considerations.

Summary: The subsidiarity principle in the European Union is connected to both ex ante and ex post subsidiarity review, involving national parliaments through the early warning system (EWS) and the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) reviewing legislation. This article theorizes and evaluates the existence of a connection between the two, finding a weak conditional connection. Limited enforcement of subsidiarity by the Court appears to be a key explanation.

Summary: This thematic issue explores the causes and modes of European disintegration, addressing two main questions: the causes of disintegration across countries and the actual and potential modes of disintegration. The articles go beyond Brexit to examine the impact of ignoring referendum results and long-term drivers of disintegration. The issue also considers overlooked topics such as temporary opt-outs from the Schengen agreement. With contributions from various social science disciplines, this innovative research advances scholarly understanding of European (dis)integration.

Summary: The Early Warning System (EWS) aims for national Parliaments to monitor the subsidiarity principle, but also addresses substantive issues. Economic similarity between Parliaments is the strongest factor associated with the co-issuance of Reasoned Opinions (ROs), suggesting that proposals with economic impacts are more likely to trigger opposition.
