Summary: New nickel (II), cobalt (II), and several copper (II) complexes were synthesized from the hydrazone ligand obtained from the reaction between 5-acetyl-4-hydroxy-2H-1,3-thiazine-2,6(3H)-dione and salicylaldehyde hydrazone. The ligand behaves as a bidentate and tetradentate chelating agent via nitrogen and oxygen atoms. The prepared complexes have octahedral geometries and their kinetic parameters were estimated using the Coats-Redfern equations.

Summary: An efficient and environmentally friendly method using hexyltriphenylphosphonium bromide ionic liquid as a promoter and solvent has been developed for the synthesis of novel compounds. The method allows for the one-pot synthesis of the target products from CH acids, aldehydes, and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole at ambient temperature, with high yields and short reaction times. Furthermore, the synthesized compounds exhibit significant anti-cancer effects on skin, prostate, and pancreatic cancers.

Summary: In this study, structure- and ligand-based drug design approaches were used to design and refine a small compound library with potential anti-proliferative activity. Thirty-two derivatives were selected for synthesis based on pharmacophoric features required for PI3K and B-Raf oncogenes inhibition. Compounds 17 and 22c showed potent anticancer effectiveness and multi-kinase activity, particularly against PI3K alpha and B-Raf(V)(600E). Further studies confirmed their safety on normal cell line and predicted ADME characteristics.

Summary: A mild and green methodology was developed for regiodivergent functionalization of isoquinoline-1,3(2H,4H)-diones under aerobic conditions. Different nucleophiles led to two types of products, one thermodynamic controlled and the other kinetic controlled. The aldol type product was further transformed into benzo[c]phenanthridine core structures under transition metal free conditions, providing an environmentally benign access to this framework.

Summary: A series of 3-(1-aminoethylidene)-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2,4(3H)-dione derivatives (APD) were synthesized and tested for herbicidal activity. The analog APD-II-15 showed good pre-emergent herbicidal activity against multiple weed species and demonstrated crop safety for wheat, soybean, millet, and sorghum. RNA sequencing suggested that the growth inhibition of weeds by APD-II-15 might result from disruptions of carbon metabolism and cytoskeleton formation.

Summary: The recycling of waste mandarin peels into biochar (MRBC) has been used as a high performance and cost-effective adsorbent for treating polluted wastewater effluents. Batch adsorption studies were conducted to analyze the adsorption competency of MRBC on two dyes, methylene blue (MB) and basic fuchsin (BF), either in individual solutions or binary combinations. The results showed that MRBC was capable of effectively removing a high percentage of both dyes. However, the adsorption capacity decreased when the dyes were combined. The cost estimation of MRBC production and wastewater treatment indicated that both were relatively low.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is commonly used for studying glassy materials in cultural heritage, but it is more difficult to interpret the spectra and apply the technique with portable instruments. In contrast, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) can be used in archaeometric investigations as it is portable and non-invasive. However, there is limited application of this technique to historical glasses. This exploratory work demonstrates the potential of DRIFTS, in combination with portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF) and EDS microanalyses, for studying the composition and alteration of glass samples in cultural heritage.
