Summary: Agro-byproducts can be effectively utilized as low-cost nutrient sources for producing various products through microbial fermentation. Wheat bran powder was identified as the most effective carbon source for xylanase production, with the optimal culture conditions resulting in a 6.9-fold increase in enzyme activity compared to un-optimized conditions. Streptomyces thermocarboxydus TKU045 showed potential for producing xylanases from wheat bran and for adsorbing dyes.

Summary: This study examines the antioxidant and geroprotective properties of wheat bran extracts with high anthocyanin levels. The results show that the extracts with anthocyanins have higher radical scavenging and membrane protective activities, and can extend the lifespan of Drosophila. However, other metabolites in wheat bran may also contribute to its antioxidant and geroprotective potential.

Summary: This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of a resin that can effectively remove oxyhalide anions. The resin showed better performance and selectivity compared to other commercial resins, and the adsorption reaction occurred at the nitrogen atoms in the resin. Furthermore, the resin could be regenerated and reused without showing any cytotoxic effects.

Summary: This study aimed to extract functional xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) from wheat bran using ultrasonic-assisted extraction, enzymatic hydrolysis, and purification methods. The optimal conditions for extraction and hydrolysis were determined, resulting in high extraction rate and XOS content. The hydrolysate was decolorized and the purified XOS showed increased concentration.

Summary: Apple polyphenols (AP) have been found to provide protective effects against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative stress damage in human colon adenocarcinoma Caco-2 cells. AP increased cell survival rate, elevated antioxidant enzyme activities, reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) content, suppressed DNA fragmentation, and decreased expression of apoptosis-related protein Caspase-3. These findings suggest that AP has the potential to ameliorate oxidative stress damage and could be further studied as an anti-oxidative stress agent.

Summary: This research evaluated the extraction efficiency of different concentrations of ethanol on PRA, and the antioxidant and hypoglycemic effects of the extracts. The results showed that the extracts had significant antioxidant and hypoglycemic properties. In addition, the extracts protected against oxidative damage in HepG2 cells, reduced blood glucose levels, and alleviated peripheral nerve damage in hyperglycemic zebrafish. This study provides important information for the application of PRA in functional food and medicinal industry.

Summary: Supercritical CO2 extraction is an effective and environmentally friendly method for recovering functional and bioactive components from wheat milling by-products. This study investigates the functional components of extracts from wheat bran and shorts obtained at different pressures, and finds that the total phenolics content and antioxidant activity of shorts extracts increase with pressure, while the total polyunsaturated fatty acid content of bran extracts increases only slightly. The FTIR spectra of the extracts resemble those of edible vegetable oils and wheat germ oil.

Summary: The surface-modified nanoparticles of Eugenol (EU) and carvacrol (CAR), known as EU-CF and CAR-CF NPs, respectively, displayed bactericidal effects on E. coli and bacteriostatic effects on Staphylococcus aureus. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis revealed significant changes in bacterial carbohydrates, lipids, and DNA. The CF conjugated NPs showed better membrane damage and DNA disintegration in Gram-negative E. coli than in Gram-positive S. aureus. Furthermore, the presence of EU-CF and CAR-CF NPs inhibited the growth of E. coli in orange juice without affecting the flavor compounds.
