Summary: Existing studies have shown a significant association between alterations in gonadal and neuroactive steroids (NASs) and mood symptoms among women with PCOS, with a particular focus on the role of allopregnanolone (ALLO) in reproductive-related psychiatric disorders. Further research is needed to better understand the biological causes of psychiatric symptoms in women with PCOS and to inform clinical treatment.

Summary: This study investigates the role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the mechanism of action of bipolar disorder (BD) medications. The findings suggest that certain lncRNAs may serve as major regulators of medication effects and have the potential to be developed as novel drug targets for treating BD.

Summary: Psychiatric disorders are highly burdensome worldwide, with many patients experiencing treatment resistance. Recent research has revealed the importance of neuroimmune systems in mood disorder biology, specifically the dysregulation in neuroimmune cross-talk driven by genetic risk factors and environmental influences. One emerging immune target is purinergic signalling via the P2X7 receptor (P2X7R). However, no clinically meaningful applications have been identified so far, highlighting the need for further research and translation of findings from bench to bedside.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of low mood, gender inequalities, and associated factors in adolescents aged 12-18 in rural and medium-sized urban areas of Central Catalonia during the 2019-2020 academic year. The results showed that the prevalence of low mood was 18.6%, with significant differences between genders. 36.2% of low mood problems in girls were accounted for by sexual violence.

Summary: Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) are small vesicles used by cells to communicate with each other and can change the function and state of cells. EVs have been implicated in the development and progression of various diseases, and understanding their roles is crucial for treatment and early diagnosis.

Summary: There are genetic and hormonal differences between males and females in both animals and humans, leading to sex-related differences in brain activity and responses to stimuli. Gender-specific medicine, previously neglected, has gained scientific and clinical attention in the last three decades. Research has identified gonadal hormones as important determinants of male-female differences, with animal studies playing a key role in understanding these differences.

Summary: This study investigated the frequency of anxiety and depression in patients with persistent asthma and found that at least 1/3 of the patients experience symptoms of anxiety and depression, highlighting the importance of screening for these disorders in asthma patients. The HADS and EQ-5D questionnaires showed moderate agreement in identifying anxiety and depression symptoms.

Summary: Evidence suggests that there is an increasing trend in the likelihood of experiencing depression over time in the general population, with no significant impact from factors such as gender, age, and type of prevalence. Moreover, the high heterogeneity across studies was not explained by any of the design variables considered, and no evidence for publication bias was found.

Summary: Self-inflicted damage to the retina using handheld lasers is a growing and underrecognized form of self-harm, which can ultimately result in legal blindness. Patients with histories of major depressive disorder and self-harm behaviors are more susceptible to this type of harm. Mental health providers should be vigilant in screening for laser pointer access and preventing permanent vision loss in at-risk individuals.

Summary: This study found that poor-quality parent-child relationships may increase the risk of mood and anxiety disorders in adulthood. Individuals with major depression, panic disorder, or persistent depressive disorder reported lower parental care and higher overprotection. Those with mood or anxiety disorders tended to report higher parental abuse.
