The study proposes a simple and fast extraction-based procedure for the determination of trace elements in estuarine sediment samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The extraction conditions were optimized using a central composite design. Optimum results were obtained when 100 mg of sediment sample was used followed by ultrasound-assisted extraction for 15 min with 7.50 mol L-1 HF (1 mL HF) and 3.50 mol L-1 HNO3 (1 mL HNO3 65% m/m). Calibration against aqueous standards was carried out with rhodium as an internal standard. The method was successfully applied for the quantitative extraction of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sn, V and Zn. Detection limits ranging from 0.02 to 0.1 mu g g(-1) and relative standard deviation lower than 8% were obtained. The method accuracy was assessed by using three certified reference materials and comparing the results from the extraction procedure with those obtained following microwave-assisted digestion of the samples; no statistical differences, based on t-test at a confidence level of 95%, were detected. The proposed method showed to be simple and fast and can be applied for sediment samples with the elimination of the sample digestion step prior to analysis. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Identification of Counterfeit Vodka by Synchronous Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Chemometric Analysis

Romulo R. Facci, Paulo S. de O. Cezario, Jefferson S. de Gois, Aderval S. Luna, Wagner F. Pacheco

Summary: This study developed a method based on synchronous fluorescence combined with chemometric tools to classify vodka samples, achieving high accuracy in distinguishing authentic from counterfeit samples. Discriminant analysis and support vector machine were successful in accurately classifying the samples, while k-nearest neighbor was not effective. Ultimately, only SVM with radial base function was able to correctly classify all brands of vodka samples using synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy.

Concentration and isotopic composition of bromine and chlorine in Antarctic sea ice

Paul Vallelonga, Jefferson S. de Gois, Daniel L. G. Borges, Marta Costas-Rodriguez, Vasileios Gkinis, Delphine Lannuzel, Andrea Spolaor, Frank Vanhaecke

Summary: This study investigated the isotopic partitioning of Br and Cl in Southern Ocean sea ice for the first time. While the concentrations of bromine and chlorine showed a positive correlation, the isotopic compositions exhibited less consistent relation and significant variability within individual ice cores. Various factors such as ice texture, age, salt content, and algal biomass content may influence isotopic fractionation processes in sea ice.

Summary: For the first time, a dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-mu SPE) based on graphene oxide was used for the ultrasensitive determination of Cd. With this method, Cd can be efficiently extracted from a mixture of alkali and alkaline earth metals without the need for an elution step. The combination of D-mu SPE and SAGD OES significantly reduces matrix effects and improves the tolerance of Cd to alkali metals. The method shows simplicity in the measurement system and the commercially available nanosorbent used.
