Summary: Vibrational spectroscopy, especially resonance Raman spectroscopy, offers unique insights into the molecular details of metalloproteins and their multiple cofactors, allowing for independent monitoring of different metal centers. Meanwhile, IR spectroscopy provides unmatched molecular details on enzymes with specific catalytic centers, coordinated by ligands like CO and CN-.

Summary: Heme sensor proteins, containing a catalytic domain and a heme-containing sensor domain, can bind diatomic gas molecules like O-2, CO, and NO. Ligand binding induces active site conformational changes, leading to activation/deactivation of biological events crucial for physiological functions. Resonance Raman spectroscopy is an effective method to study the sensing mechanism of these proteins and their diverse physiological functions.

Summary: The HupZ protein binds heme through its His(6)-tag, leading to heme-induced higher-order oligomeric structure and heme stacking. The results do not support the classification of HupZ as a heme oxygenase, as slow heme binding and weak heme degradation activity are associated with the His(6)-tag.

Summary: Human heme oxygenase-1 (hHO-1) plays a crucial role in metabolizing free heme and has protective properties in cells. In the context of cancer, inhibitors targeting hHO-1 have potential for anti-cancer therapy. This study characterizes the interactions between azole-based inhibitors and hHO-1, providing insights into their binding and inhibitory properties.

Summary: In this study, a fluorescent sensor based on an acetylpyrene fluorophore containing imidazole HP-1 was synthesized and successfully modulated by anionic surfactant SDS. The sensor showed selective fluorescence sensing towards heme proteins, and the interaction between heme protein Mb and phospholipid DMPC vesicles was studied. The results demonstrated that Mb induced the lysis of DMPC liposomes.

Summary: Although the use of molecular hydrogen (H-2) for enhanced plant growth and postharvest storage of crops has not been widely accepted in the UK, evidence shows that it can alleviate plant stress and slow crop senescence. The effects of H-2 treatment appear to be mediated by the alteration of plant cell antioxidant capacity, with potential benefits in agriculture if the costs are justified. Hydrogen-rich water (HRW) is considered safe and relatively easy to use, suggesting that it could potentially be widely adopted in the UK and help reduce food waste in the future.

Summary: Indium selenide (InSe) nanosheets demonstrate excellent detection performance for toxic NO2 under UV activation, with high sensitivity, full recovery, and outstanding selectivity and stability at room temperature. The enhanced charge transfer and interaction between NO2 molecules and InSe caused by UV illumination contribute to the impressive detection limit of 10 ppb, one order of magnitude lower than without UV. This work provides new ideas for high-performance RT sensors based on 2D materials.

Summary: Ternary hybrid composite of PANI-loaded Co3O4-TiO2 nanoparticles was synthesized and investigated for acetone sensing at 25°C. The 0.01 wt% PANI-loaded 0.85TiO2-0.15 Co3O4 composite nanoparticles showed the highest response to acetone under UV illumination. The improved performance was attributed to the formation of p-n heterojunctions, promising effects of PANI, and the UV light effect. This study highlights the potential of these compounds or related compounds for highly reliable acetone sensing at 25°C.

Summary: The cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes can catalyse oxidation reactions and their heme and active site environment can be studied using UV-visible absorbance spectroscopy. The binding of imidazole and pyridine-based ligands to different forms of bacterial cytochrome P450 enzymes was evaluated using this technique. The majority of ligands interacted with the heme as expected, but differences in heme environment were observed across enzyme/ligand combinations.

Summary: The porous ZnO-SnO2-Zn2SnO4 heterojunction nanofibers were prepared using electrospinning and high ramp rate heat treatment, showing significantly enhanced ethanol sensing capabilities under UV light irradiation. The response of ZnO-SnO2-Zn2SnO4 nanofibers to ethanol was much higher than that of pure Zn2SnO4 nanofibers, and remained effective even in high humidity conditions.

Summary: The heme-based chlorite dismutases can also catalyze the decomposition of bromite. The formation of Cpd II and center dot ClO2 is observed in the reaction mixture, and the rate of proton transfer plays a critical role in the oxidation of an amino acid. These findings provide insights into the catalytic activity of chlorite dismutases and their potential applications.

Summary: This article reviews SEIRA sensors based on metal plasmonics for the detection of biomolecules such as DNA, proteins, and lipids. It further focuses on chemical SEIRA sensors and their potential applications in quality control, as well as the development of multiresonant SEIRA substrates as sensors for multiple analytes. Finally, the integration of SEIRA sensors with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is introduced.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the anion channelrhodopsin GtACR1 operates with a highly conducting C=N-anti-photocycle, without the inactivation observed in CrChR2, showing the potential for optimized optogenetic tools. The importance of the central constriction site amino acid Glu-68 in molecular gating mechanisms is highlighted, suggesting that canceling out poorly conducting photocycles could enhance channelrhodopsin efficiency for optogenetic applications.

Summary: Research has shown that various post-translationally modified proteoforms of alpha-synuclein accumulate in Lewy bodies in different regions of the Parkinson's disease brain, providing insights into the orchestration of Lewy pathology. High-resolution and 3D multicolor microscopy in post-mortem human brain tissues offer potential mechanisms underlying a regulated Lewy body morphogenesis.
