The Expression of PEDF and its Putative Receptors in Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Background Liver Tissue

Jun Akiba, Takafumi Yoshida, Eiji Sadashima, Kazuya Murata, Takanori Matsui, Sho-Ichi Yamagishi, Hironori Kusano, Yutaro Mihara, Shinji Mizuochi, Yoshinao Kinjou, Yoshiki Naito, Toru Hisaka, Hisamune Sakai, Koji Okuda, Osamu Nakashima, Hirohisa Yano

Summary: PEDF/LR/ATGL may serve as potential biomarkers in HCC and other chronic liver diseases. High LR expression in HCC is associated with high histological grade and portal vein invasion, while high PEDF expression is linked to absence of portal vein invasion. In background liver tissue, high LR expression is linked to low serum albumin levels and is an independent prognostic factor for worse outcomes. Cases with more than 5% fatty degeneration in background liver tissue do not show high PEDF expression.

Glucose Variability is Independently Correlated with Serum Level of Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor in Type 2 Diabetes

Tomoki Fujikawa, Makoto Ohara, Yo Kohata, Hiroe Nagaike, Ayako Fukase, Naoya Osaka, Hironori Yashima, Nobuko Sato, Hideki Kushima, Kyoko Shinmura, Yasuyoshi Takahashi, Munenori Hiromura, Michishige Terasaki, Yusaku Mori, Tomoyasu Fukui, Takanori Matsui, Tsutomu Hirano, Sho-ichi Yamagishi

Summary: This study found that serum PEDF levels in patients with T2DM were positively correlated with parameters such as body mass index, triglycerides, and oxidative stress, while they were inversely correlated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and estimated glomerular filtration rate. Additionally, changes in glycemic variability and oxidative stress were also associated with changes in serum PEDF levels after 24 weeks of treatment.

Pigment epithelium-derived factor inhibits advanced glycation end product-induced proliferation, VEGF and MMP-9 expression in breast cancer cells via interaction with laminin receptor

Shiori Tsuruhisa, Takanori Matsui, Yoshinori Koga, Ami Sotokawauchi, Minoru Yagi, Sho-Ichi Yamagishi

Summary: PEDF may exert antitumor effects in AGE-exposed breast cancer cells by suppressing NADPH oxidase-induced ROS generation and VEGF and MMP-9 expression via interaction with LR. This study suggests that pharmacological upregulation or restoration of PEDF may inhibit the growth and metastasis of breast cancer, as PEDF expression is decreased in breast cancer tissues.

Increased Urinary Levels of Pentosidine Measured by a Newly Developed Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay Are Independently Correlated with Fracture After Fall

Nobuhiro Tahara, Atsuko Tahara, Shoko Maeda-Ogata, Hanae Yoshimura, Munehisa Bekki, Yoichi Sugiyama, Akihiro Honda, Sachiyo Igata, Yuri Nishino, Takanori Matsui, Ako Fukami, Mika Enomoto, Hisashi Adachi, Yoshihiro Fukumoto, Sho-ichi Yamagishi

Summary: The study found a correlation between increased serum levels of glyceraldehyde-derived AGEs and aging-related disorders, but it is unclear which structurally distinct AGEs could be reliable biomarkers. The findings suggest that measuring urine pentosidine-to-creatinine ratio with a newly developed ELISA kit may help identify high-risk patients for fall-related fractures.

SMTP-44D Inhibits Atherosclerotic Plaque Formation in Apolipoprotein-E Null Mice Partly by Suppressing the AGEs-RAGE Axis

Michishige Terasaki, Keita Shibata, Yusaku Mori, Tomomi Saito, Takanori Matsui, Makoto Ohara, Tomoyasu Fukui, Keiji Hasumi, Yuichiro Higashimoto, Koji Nobe, Sho-ichi Yamagishi

Summary: SMTP-44D inhibits the formation of atherosclerotic plaques by blocking the AGEs-RAGE pathway and reduces macrophage infiltration and AGEs accumulation in the aortic roots. It also reduces foam cell formation in macrophages by suppressing the Cdk5-CD36 pathway.
