Summary: The study presents a method to develop mechanically strong and thermally stable polyamide 6 (PA 6) and cellulose nanofibers (CNF) composites on an industrial scale. By using a high speed kinetic mixer and implementing extremely short processing time, good dispersion and thermal stability can be achieved, making it suitable for high performance applications. The results showed significant improvements in Young's modulus and ultimate strength with increasing CNF content, demonstrating the industrially viable manufacturing processes to fabricate high performance PA 6/CNF nanocomposites.

Summary: By incorporating corn starch and cellulose nanofibrils into biodegradable poly (vinyl alcohol) through melt-processing, mechanically robust and sustainable composites were successfully prepared. Analysis showed that this approach can improve the thermoplasticity and broaden the processing window of PVA composites, while enhancing their tensile strength, modulus, and elongation at break.

Summary: Polyketones (PKs) with strong hydrogen bonding properties and a chain extender are added to nylon 6 (PA6) in melt processing to enhance processability. The addition of a chain extender and PKs alters the chain structure of PA6, increasing melt viscosity and forming physical crosslinks through hydrogen bonding, leading to decreased crystallinity.

Summary: This article qualitatively reviews the impact of various parameters in the melt blending processing on the mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites. It is found that the tensile modulus of the extruded nano-sized fillers-reinforced polymers is highly influenced by the distribution and orientation of the fillers. The use of intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruders can produce nanocomposites with superior mechanical strength.

Summary: In this study, vacuum infiltration technique was used to fabricate nanofiber-reinforced epoxy matrix composites. The results showed that the reinforcement of nylon 6 nanofibers significantly improved the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites. Although the ultimate tensile strength of N6/YD composite decreased, the N6/YDJR and N6/JR composites showed significant improvement in tensile strength and Young's modulus. The thermogravimetric analysis also showed improved thermal stability of the epoxy resin matrices after the incorporation of nylon 6 nanofibers.

Summary: The current packaging materials market is dominated by single-use plastics derived from petrochemicals, which are inexpensive and environmentally stable. However, these plastics pose a threat to the environment as they are rarely recycled and often end up in landfills or littered in the environment. Nature-derived and biodegradable polymers offer potential alternatives, but their barrier properties fall short compared to traditional plastics. Therefore, there is a need to enhance the barrier properties of sustainable polymer systems through chemistry and processing technology. This review summarizes the important contributions and advancements in improving the gas and moisture barrier properties of sustainable polymer systems for packaging applications, including microstructure tuning, surface energy modification, morphology control, and self-assembly.

Summary: This study systematically explores the toughening mechanism of thermoplastic polymer particle materials and ways to overcome the typical compromise in energy-absorbing composites through modeling and experimental research. The main energy-absorbing mechanism was found to be matrix yielding, which results from particle debonding and significantly contributes to crack propagation.

Summary: In this study, nylon 6,6 based hybrid nanocomposite films loaded with CNFs were prepared on cellulosic substrates using air spray coating technique. The results showed the formation of crystalline films with a conductive network due to the evenly distributed CNFs in the polymer matrix. The polymer nanocomposite samples exhibited significantly increased dc conductivity with the gradual increase of CNF content. The sample containing 50 wt% CNFs showed a dc conductivity value of 0.03 Scm(-1) and a shielding effectiveness of 44 dB through THz-TDS.

Summary: The commercial 20 wt% solid paste of microfibrillated aramid fibers (MFAs) containing water was treated with potassium hydroxide in dimethyl sulfoxide to produce aramid nanofibers (ANFs). Nanocomposites composed of a water-soluble nylon (A-90) and ANFs were prepared, showing that ANFs are finer than MFAs and exhibit superior mechanical properties in terms of tensile strength, modulus, and toughness.
