Summary: We present the moderating effects of prior suicidal behavior, psychiatric diagnoses, and psychotropic medications on the antisuicidal effects of folic acid. Data from a large cohort of patients were analyzed, showing no significant moderation effects. These findings suggest that folic acid may have a comparable antisuicidal effect in psychiatric populations at higher risk of suicide, and that it could potentially add to the benefits of psychotropic medications.

Summary: Research on suicide attempt motivations identified two main factors: interpersonal motivation and intrapersonal motivation. Interpersonal motivation was associated with younger age and problematic alcohol use, while intrapersonal motivation was related to previous suicide attempts, more negative life events in the past year, and higher depressive symptoms.

Summary: The charcoal restriction program in New Taipei City did not show a significant reduction in charcoal-burning or overall suicide rates. Future suicide prevention strategies should focus on optimizing program sustainability, ensuring comprehensive means restriction, and monitoring long-term intervention effectiveness.

Summary: This study examines the impact of genetic liability to suicide attempt and suicide death, finding that family genetic risk scores play a significant role in predicting both outcomes. Univariate and multivariate models show that the highest genetic risk scores are for suicide attempt, alcohol use disorder, drug use disorder, and major depression. While some of the genetic risk factors for psychiatric disorders contribute to the risk for suicide attempt and suicide death through the development of these disorders, these risks also directly predispose to suicidal behaviors.

Summary: The present study aimed to examine the relationship between suicide attempt, gender, and age. Data from the Hamadan Suicide Registry Program (2016-2017) were analyzed. Results showed that suicide attempts were less frequent among elderly patients. Elderly patients were more likely to use poison and self-immolation as means of attempted suicide. The rate of suicide attempts was higher in married females compared to males. Male suicide attempts peaked in autumn, while female suicide attempts peaked in summer. Females were more likely to use drugs, while males were more likely to engage in self-harm. Gender and age are important risk factors for suicide attempts.

Summary: Despite similar externalizing behaviors, a significant relationship between external and internal depression symptoms was found only in men in this forensic psychiatric sample. Male forensic patients with a history of suicide had higher scores in the Gender-Sensitive Depression Screening, while female patients with a history of suicide had higher scores in the Beck Depression Inventory Revision. These findings suggest that the Gender-Sensitive Depression Screening may be useful for detecting depression symptoms in men and developing suicide prevention assessments in forensic practice.

Summary: This study found that major psychiatric disorders and diathesis-related traits contribute to suicidal behavior, and there are shared polygenic effects between different psychiatric disorders/traits. Although the sample size is small and limits the analysis, these results are still significant.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the association between psychiatric diagnosis and selected psychosocial factors and the risk of suicide attempts among adolescent psychiatric patients. The primary diagnoses of mood disorders and emotional and behavioral disorders were found to be associated with a higher risk of suicide attempts. Other psychosocial factors such as truancy, sexual abuse, heartbreak, and frequent conflicts were also related to an increased risk of suicide attempts.

Summary: Suicide by charcoal burning is a serious method that has become increasingly common in Hong Kong and is spreading to other countries. Media plays an important role in triggering and spreading information about this suicide method. Current prevention strategies focus on restricting access to charcoal and raising public awareness, but there is limited information on their long-term effectiveness and sustainability.

Summary: This study aims to estimate the risk of suicide attempt repetition and examine the role of risk factors and prevention programs. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 110 studies showed that one in five suicide attempters will engage in a new attempt. Female sex, self-cutting methods, and mental disorder diagnosis were associated with an increased risk of repetition. Preventive programs, especially psychotherapy interventions, can contribute to reducing repetition risk.

Summary: This study analyzed the neural features of late-life depression patients and found the neural mechanisms associated with suicidal thoughts and actions. The study showed that the functional connectivity direction and strength of the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex-caudate circuitry were related to suicidal thoughts and actions, while gray matter reductions in the default mode network and lateral prefrontal regions were related to suicidal actions. The results of this study are important for improving the management and prevention of suicidality.

Summary: This study investigated the sex differences in the relationship between excessive drinking and the risk of metabolic abnormalities. It found that males were at higher risks of certain metabolic abnormalities, while females were more likely to develop hypertension. Both males and females who engaged in hazardous drinking had a greater risk of metabolic abnormalities compared to those who did not drink excessively. However, after controlling for demographics and lifestyle-related habits, there was no interaction effect of sex and excessive drinking on the risks of metabolic abnormalities.
