N-acetyl-L-cysteine exerts a complex action on endometrial cells, involving regulation of gene expression and protein activity and location, all converging into a decreased proliferation and a switch toward a differentiating, less invasive, and less inflammatory phenotype. Also considering the lack of undesired side effects, including unaffected fertility potential, this suggests a beneficial use of NAC in endometriosis clinical treatment. Label-free spectroscopic characterization of exosomes reveals cancer cell differentiation

Sabrina Romano, Flavio Di Giacinto, Aniello Primiano, Jacopo Gervasoni, Alberto Mazzini, Massimiliano Papi, Andrea Urbani, Annalucia Serafino, Marco De Spirito, Ewa K. Krasnowska, Gabriele Ciasca

Summary: FTIR spectroscopy is an effective method for studying the differences in cancer-derived EXOs from different cell phenotypes, providing possibilities for diagnosis. The spectral features of EXOs derived from different cell phenotypes in the infrared range can be used to monitor cell changes effectively.

Amanda Antonelli, Silvia Capuani, Giada Ercolani, Miriam Dolciami, Sandra Ciulla, Veronica Celli, Bernd Kuehn, Maria Grazia Piccioni, Antonella Giancotti, Maria Grazia Porpora, Carlo Catalano, Lucia Manganaro

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the potential of Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) Imaging in identifying and discriminating different forms of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and normal fetuses pregnancies through the quantification of placental micro-perfusion and microstructural features. The results showed that IVIM parameters are effective in discriminating between small for gestational age (SGA) and fetal growth restriction (FGR), and in detecting microvascular subtle impairment. Additionally, the perfusion IVIM parameter (fp) was found to predict fetuses' body weight in IUGR pregnancies, while the diffusion IVIM parameter (D) reflected more rapid microstructural rearrangement in the placenta due to aging processes in the IUGR group.

Essential Oil from Eucalyptus globulus (Labill.) Activates Complement Receptor-Mediated Phagocytosis and Stimulates Podosome Formation in Human Monocyte-Derived Macrophages

Manuela Zonfrillo, Federica Andreola, Ewa K. Krasnowska, Gianluca Sferrazza, Pasquale Pierimarchi, Annalucia Serafino

Summary: Eucalyptus essential oil and its major component eucalyptol have immunostimulatory effects, enhancing the phagocytic activity of macrophages and promoting pathogen clearance. Additionally, eucalyptus essential oil stimulates the formation of podosomes and increases the expression of podosome components. These findings provide further evidence of the multiple properties of eucalyptus essential oil, including immune activation, in addition to its known antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.

Endometriosis and Sexual Functioning: How Much Do Cognitive and Psycho-Emotional Factors Matter?

Valentina Rossi, Roberta Galizia, Francesca Tripodi, Chiara Simonelli, Maria Grazia Porpora, Filippo Maria Nimbi

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between cognitive and psycho-emotional factors and sexual functioning of women with endometriosis. The results showed that women with endometriosis had worse scores in terms of pain, sexual distress, and negative emotions, while scoring lower in emotion identification and sexual cognition. These findings suggest that sexual health professionals should address patients' psychological, emotional, and cognitive factors.

What is the Hidden Biological Mechanism Underlying the Possible SARS-CoV-2 Vertical Transmission? A Mini Review

Rosa Sessa, Emanuela Anastasi, Gabriella Brandolino, Roberto Brunelli, Marisa Di Pietro, Simone Filardo, Luisa Masciullo, Gianluca Terrin, Maria Federica Viscardi, Maria Grazia Porpora

Summary: This review provides an overview of the currently available evidence on vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2, suggesting the possibility of transplacental infection based on the presence of SARS-CoV-2 genome in different biological specimens. Although mother-to-child infections have been infrequently reported, it can occur under certain biological conditions. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 vertical transmission is crucial for planning appropriate management for affected mothers and newborns.

Influence of Polydatin on the Tumor Microenvironment In Vitro: Studies with a Colon Cancer Cell Model

Alex De Gregorio, Ewa Krystyna Krasnowska, Manuela Zonfrillo, Giampietro Ravagnan, Valentina Bordignon, Enzo Bonmassar, Maria Pia Fuggetta

Summary: This study investigates the effects of Polydatin (PD) on colon cancer. The results show that PD has antiproliferative and proapoptotic effects, reduces the production of immunosuppressive and proinflammatory cytokines, and decreases the expression of adhesion molecules on endothelial cells. These findings provide preclinical support for the use of PD as a therapeutic adjuvant in colon cancer treatment.

Summary: The mean diagnostic delay of symptomatic endometriosis in Italy is about 11 years, with patients under the age of 20 experiencing a delay of up to 4 years. There is no significant association between a delayed diagnosis and clinically relevant factors such as the severity of symptoms or the method of diagnosis.

In-Silico Functional Metabolic Pathways Associated to Chlamydia trachomatis Genital Infection

Simone Filardo, Marisa Di Pietro, Marta De Angelis, Gabriella Brandolino, Maria Grazia Porpora, Rosa Sessa

Summary: High-throughput technologies, such as 16s rDNA sequencing, have enhanced our understanding of the microbiota composition in the genital tract during infections like Chlamydia trachomatis. In this study, the predicted metabolic pathways of the cervicovaginal microbiota associated with C. trachomatis genital infection were investigated using PICRUSt2 analysis. The results showed diverse metabolic pathways in women with a CST-IV microbiota, regardless of infection status. C. trachomatis infection altered the metabolic profiles, leading to an increased prevalence of certain pathways. This study provides insights for future metabolomic studies on the metabolic pathways characterizing C. trachomatis genital infection in the cervicovaginal microenvironment.

Protective Effect of Limosilactobacillus fermentum ME-3 against the Increase in Paracellular Permeability Induced by Chemotherapy or Inflammatory Conditions in Caco-2 Cell Models

Alex De Gregorio, Annalucia Serafino, Ewa Krystyna Krasnowska, Fabiana Superti, Maria Rosa Di Fazio, Maria Pia Fuggetta, Ivano Hammarberg Ferri, Carla Fiorentini

Summary: Chemotherapy and gut inflammation can lead to increased intestinal permeability, but the gut microbiota may play a role in maintaining intestinal barrier integrity. This study found that L. fermentum ME-3 can prevent the increase in intestinal permeability caused by chemotherapy or inflammation and reduce the release of inflammatory cytokines. These findings suggest that L. fermentum ME-3 may be a valuable therapeutic tool for preventing leaky gut syndrome.
