Purpose: To evaluate current applications of e-learning in radiology. Material and methods: A Medline search was performed using PubMed (National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, MD) for publications discussing the applications of e-learning in radiology. The search strategy employed a single combination of the following terms: (1) e-learning, and (2) education and (3) radiology. This review was limited to human studies and to English-language literature. We reviewed all the titles and subsequent the abstract of 29 articles that appeared pertinent. Additional articles were identified by reviewing the reference lists of relevant papers. Finally, the full text of 38 selected articles was reviewed. Results: Literature data shows that with the constant development of technology and global spread of computer networks, in particular of the Internet, the integration of multimedia and interactivity introduced into electronic publishing has allowed the creation of multimedia applications that provide valuable support for medical teaching and continuing medical education, specifically for radiology. Such technologies are valuable tools for collaboration, interactivity, simulation, and self-testing. However, not everything on the World Wide Web is useful, accurate, or beneficial: the quality and veracity of medical information on the World Wide Web is variable and much time can be wasted as many websites do not meet basic publication standards. Conclusion: E-learning will become an important source of education in radiology. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Focal hepatic intrinsically hyperattenuating lesions at unenhanced CT: Not always calcifications

Francesco Agnello, Lidia Rabiolo, Federico Midiri, Giuseppe Lo Re, Emanuele Grassedonio, Ludovico La Grutta, Salvatore Buscemi, Antonino Agrusa, Massimo Galia

Summary: The increasing use of CT has led to a higher rate of detecting focal liver lesions, including intrinsically hyperattenuating lesions or pseudolesions. These high-density liver lesions can be non-calcified or calcified, with causes such as hemorrhage, thrombosis, calcifications, and severe liver steatosis. Identifying the etiologies associated with hyperattenuation on unenhanced CT can aid radiologists in characterizing focal liver lesions and pseudolesions.

Concordance of Radiological, Laparoscopic and Laparotomic Scoring to Predict Complete Cytoreduction in Women with Advanced Ovarian Cancer

Mariano Catello Di Donna, Giuseppe Cucinella, Giulia Zaccaria, Giuseppe Lo Re, Agata Crapanzano, Sergio Salerno, Vincenzo Giallombardo, Giulio Sozzi, Anna Fagotti, Giovanni Scambia, Antonio Simone Lagana, Vito Chiantera

Summary: Complete cytoreductive surgery is crucial for women with advanced ovarian cancer, and laparoscopic score assessment provides high accuracy in predicting optimal cytoreduction. Radiologic and laparotomic scoring assessments showed lower accuracy in predicting complete cytoreduction. Integrating laparoscopic evaluation as part of the treatment decision-making process is necessary for accurately selecting treatment strategies in advanced ovarian cancer patients.

Useless and limits of Postmortem CT (PMCT) in a complex case of preterm infant murder

Ilaria Viola, Maria Chiara Terranova, Giuseppe Lo Re, Giovanni De Lisi, Gregorio Serra, Emiliano Maresi, Sergio Salerno

Summary: The case report highlights the utility of post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) in detecting signs of live birth in a deceased baby, comparing the findings with standard autopsies and histological examinations. The report describes a case of a newborn who was thrown out of a fifth-floor window onto a footpath, while the mother hid immediately after giving birth. PMCT revealed aerated lung parenchyma, severe lung distress, air in the airways without any fluid, and air in the upper gastrointestinal tract, indicating no resuscitation measures were performed on the baby at delivery. Multiple skull fractures and degeneration of cerebral parenchyma were also detected. All these findings were confirmed by conventional autopsies, histological, and immunohistochemical examinations, highlighting the usefulness of PMCT in distinguishing live births from stillbirths.

Summary: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are common intestinal tumors that arise from the interstitial cells of Cajal in the gastrointestinal tract. Usually asymptomatic, especially small tumors may be incidentally found on abdominal CT scans. The discovery of receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors has changed the outcome of patients with high-risk GISTs.

Role of MRI in the Assessment of Cervical Cancer

Giuseppe Lo Re, Giuseppe Cucinella, Giulia Zaccaria, Agata Crapanzano, Sergio Salerno, Antonio Pinto, Antonio Lo Casto, Vito Chiantera

Summary: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women, divided into squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Disease extent and metastases determine prognosis. Accurate tumor staging is crucial for treatment planning. The FIGO and TNM classifications are commonly used for patient classification and treatment guidance. Useful Evidence by Post-Mortem CT and Stereomicroscopy in Bone Injury: A Case Series from Forensic Practice

Giuseppe Davide Albano, Giovanni Scalzo, Ginevra Malta, Maria Puntarello, Alberto Alongi, Donatella Piscionieri, Giuseppe Francesco Lo Re, Sergio Salerno, Stefania Zerbo, Antonina Argo

Summary: The investigation of bone injuries is crucial in forensic medicine, especially when dealing with charred or dismembered human remains. This study presents the analysis of two cases of different bone injuries and the techniques used to differentiate relevant pathology findings. PMCT was effective in distinguishing thermal bone lesions from traumatic lesions, while the stereomicroscope provided better characterization and evaluation of shear injuries. Rapid techniques such as PMCT and stereomicroscopy are valuable for investigating bone injuries in forensic cases.

Are we overusing abdominal computed tomography scans in young patients referred in an emergency for acute abdominal pain?

Sergio Salerno, Maria Chiara Terranova, Maria Anzelmo, Alessia Vinci, Federica Vernuccio, Giorgio Collura, Maurizio Marrale, Giuseppe Lo Re

Summary: The primary objective of this study was to assess the frequency of appropriateness of computed tomography (CT) for acute abdominal pain (AAP) in the emergency department. The secondary aim was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound (US) and CT in the diagnosis of AAP causes, and the third objective was to evaluate the extent of ionizing radiation exposure resulting from inappropriate CT examinations for AAP. The results showed that better clinical framing and correct interpretation of reference guidelines could reduce unnecessary radiation exposure.

Myocardial strain parameters in pulmonary hypertension are determined by changes in volumetric function rather than by hemodynamic alterations

Volha Nizhnikava, Ursula Reiter, Gabor Kovacs, Clemens Reiter, Corina Kraeuter, Horst Olschewski, Michael Fuchsjaeger, Gert Reiter

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between cardiac magnetic resonance feature-tracking-derived myocardial strain parameters and volumetric function and hemodynamic parameters in patients with pulmonary hypertension. The results showed that impairment of myocardial strains was more strongly associated with alterations in ventricular function parameters than elevated pulmonary arterial pressure, limiting the diagnostic information of myocardial strain parameters in pulmonary hypertension.
